Hermeus is an aerospace and defense technology company focused on developing hypersonic aircraft quickly and cost-effectively by integrating hardware-rich, iterative development with modern computing and autonomy. Hermeus is a startup developing hypersonic aircraft to radically accelerate air travel. At Mach 5, more than twice the speed of the supersonic Concorde, passengers will be able to cross the Atlantic in 90 minutes. On the path to hypersonic passenger aircraft, Hermeus is partnering with government agencies including the US Air Force and NASA to develop a series of autonomous aircraft that derisk the technology and solve urgent national security challenges. These products provide the data and confidence necessary to certify, produce, operate, and maintain safe and comfortable commercial aircraft. Hypersonic aircraft have the potential to create trillions of dollars of new global economic growth per year, unlocking significant resources that can be utilized to solve the world’s greatest problems.

During Black History month we’re thinking about some of the incredible black pilots in aviation history. Here are just a few and their remarkable stories:
 
1.   Bessie Coleman – Bessie Coleman shattered barriers as the first female African American pilot, earning her wings in France after American schools turned her away. Known as “Brave Bessie,” she was a celebrated stunt flyer who stood against racism, refusing to participate in aviation events that prohibited African Americans. Her legacy continues with one of our J85 engines named in her honor.
2.   Eugene Ballard - After leaving Georgia for France, Eugene became the first African American combat aviator with the Lafayette Flying Corps during WWI. Post-war, he rejoined the French army at 46, returning to the U.S. after being wounded. Honored as a hero in France, he lit the ‘Everlasting Flame’ under the Arc de Triomphe and was posthumously commissioned a second lieutenant by the U.S. Air Force.
3.   Cornelius Coffey – Denied professional flight training due to his race, Cornelius Coffey founded the pivotal Coffey School of Aeronautics in Chicago, nurturing Black pilots during the Great Depression and WWII. Holding the first African American pilot certificate and mechanic’s license, Coffey significantly advanced racial integration in aviation fields.
4.   Daniel James Jr - The first black four-star general in any US military branch – James completed 101 combat missions in the Korean War, 78 during Vietnam, and was known for his patriotic speeches and ability to stay cool under pressure. One incredible story revolves around his leadership deescalating a standoff in Syria during the 1969 Libyan coup. He met face-to-face with Mohammar Qaddafi and led a successful and conflict-free drawdown at Wheelus Air Base.
