PSA: First-party data can't just be used for personalizing emails.

Don't get me wrong; lifecycle marketers can see some serious wins by simply adding a {first_name} variable in their emails, but all the other places where that same data can be used are so often ignored...

By simply appending first_name and email_address to audience and conversion uploads to paid social platforms like Meta and TikTok, performance marketers can unlock massive performance lifts across their campaigns - all while customers are treated with more relevant and personalized advertisements.

Those same (simple) identifiers can also be used in identity graphs and Data Clean Rooms - providing you with a better understanding of who your customers really are and how they interact with your brand across the web - enabling you to make better product and campaign decisions.

None of that happens if your first-party customer data is simply just stored in an email platform 😥

Instead, it needs to be stored and managed centrally - readily available to be federated out (in a governed way) by self-serve activation tools that can power any use case across BOTH Adtech and Martech.

Whether your organization chooses to solve this with a legacy CDP or a Composable CDP on top of your data warehouse is up to you (we at Hightouch have some very strong thoughts here that I'll save for another day) - but let's all agree that you need a central store (that isn't your email platform) to power both your Adtech and Martech use cases with first-party data.

I have a personal confession and some exciting news to share...

I know I usually criticize traditional Customer Data Platforms (CDPs)... "CDPs are dead" or "Friends don't let friends buy a CDP" 😬 

BUT there's one thing that I think CDPs have actually done quite well ✅ 

CDPs got a lot of things right about behavioral event collection. Especially Segment, which in many ways set standards for the rest of the industry

However, there's room for improvement 🤔. I've shared my raw thoughts here along with an exciting product launch (hint hint— Event Streaming)

We’re feeling the ❤️ for our newest feature: real-time event streaming!

You can now set up real-time event streams from sources like Hightouch Events, Materialize, and Kafka to messaging platforms like Iterable and Braze, and to analytics platforms like Mixpanel.

Not only does event streaming help our users put data to work in real-time— it also helps future customers migrate from traditional CDPs to Hightouch. Now, companies can choose to re-create their CDP event streams one-to-one in Hightouch, or to instead power their real-time use cases from the warehouse with Streaming Reverse ETL.
