This week held an important milestone for the quantum computing field, thanks to incredible work on quantum error correction from the Google team. Their Senior Staff Software Engineer, Dave Bacon, and John Preskill, Professor of Theoretical Physics at Caltech, were guests on our Quantum Well podcast episode on fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Throwback to February 2022 when we discussed how the threshold is calculated in quantum computing, the brute force approach, cosmic rays and whether we’ll need to go underground, like in a science fiction book by Robert Sawyer.

Prior to joining Horizon, Ratna held Product Management, Ad Sales and Sales Finance roles at Arcadia, Google, and HP. He holds a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering (Honours) from Anna University Chennai, followed by a Master of Business Administration from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, and an Advanced Management Program in Business Analytics from the Indian School of Business.

Achieving quantum advantage demands tighter integration between software and hardware. To that end, we are establishing a hardware testbed to integrate with our software stack Triple Alpha.

This next chapter of our growth reminds us of when we started building our headquarters four years ago. In just a few weeks, we’ve progressed from empty floors to carpentry installations, making way for our quantum testbed, meeting rooms and work spaces.

We are proud to pioneer a new era of quantum computing by being the first quantum software company to have our own quantum hardware on-premises.

To program computers, it took 70 years to go from Assembly to the levels of abstraction that we know today. At Horizon, our end goal is to allow users to program quantum computers the same way you program classical ones. That is why we are building software development tools with expressive and Turing-complete quantum languages. When quantum hardware comes to maturity, our tools will be there to fully harness the power of those machines to tackle hard computational problems.

Our CEO Dr Joe Fitzsimons sat down with Anastasia Marchenkova to talk about what we’ve achieved on our path to classical-to-quantum compilation. 

🔵 While most quantum programming frameworks today are circuit-based, we allow for non-circuit computation including indefinite loops, classical and quantum conditionals, and recursion.
🔵 Our system enables runtime interaction with other computer systems, making interactive programs such as REPLs (read-evaluate-print loops) easy to implement with only a few dozen lines of code.
🔵 Using post-selection, we can emulate mid-circuit measurements to allow for flow control conditioned on measurement outcomes.

These capabilities open up new directions that aren’t practical or even feasible within other programming paradigms.

We are pleased to announce that we welcomed Eoin Scanlon as a VP of Operations.

A retired Lieutenant Colonel, Eoin joined Horizon after a distinguished 22-year career in the Irish Defence Forces, where he worked primarily in military communications, ICT and cybersecurity. A former Commanding Officer with several overseas tours of duty, Eoin brings a wealth of experience in leadership, operations, project management and logistics to Horizon. With Bachelors degrees in both Mathematics and Physics, and Masters Degrees in Mathematical Physics, Data Analytics, Communications Technology Management and Leadership, Eoin brings a unique blend of expertise and experience to the role.

“By making the power of quantum accessible to any developer, Horizon is tackling one of the major barriers to useful quantum computing,” says Eoin. “From Triple Alpha to Horizon’s first-of-a-kind quantum hardware testbed and beyond, I’m delighted to be joining the team and helping the company navigate the exciting road ahead.”

What are you looking forward to in the next evolution of quantum computing? For our Chief Scientist, Dr Si-Hui Tan, it’s the interplay between software and hardware, and seeing where software could offer error mitigation or coding tools for quantum computers. This is an exciting time for quantum computing given all the improvements in hardware and error correction we are seeing, she said on the quantum computing panel on the main stage of the #TNWconference.
