Q: What are the #NESC requirements for clearances over buildings if there's an accessible ladder or other way to get up to the roof? A: If a door, stairway, or permanently mounted ladder* gives access to that portion of the building, the clearances from NESC Table 234-1 for portions of buildings that are “readily accessible to persons” apply, but don’t forget that Rule 234A requires the clearances to be checked at the “worst case” sag, not the clearances on the day it is installed or the day it is inspected. *Note: Leaning a ladder up yourself and climbing does not qualify as readily accessible. In honor of #STEMDay , we are shining a light on The 1881 Institute of Technology , a nonprofit workforce development initiative that prepares underrepresented populations for careers in engineering and technology. As part of a pilot apprenticeship program with their local utility, Entergy, they are launching a new training offering for apprentices to learn pole loading analysis. We are happy to support the program by offering access and training on our IKE PoleForeman software for the students to learn and apply in future careers. Pole loading analysis (PLA) is a critical function for utilities, involving the evaluation of utility pole conditions through principles of statics and other engineering concepts. Analysts must understand and account for the many forces that affect a utility pole - such as its size, strength, and material, weight of equipment attached to it, and environmental or weather conditions that impact it. Accurate PLA ultimately helps prevent overloading, which can lead to pole failures and safety hazards. We look forward to kicking off this initiative and the training! When it comes to managing joint-use projects such as pole transfers or attachment requests, tracking workflows and notifications is time consuming for both pole owners and attachers. NJUNS goes a long way to helping enable efficient collaboration, but finding the right ticketing data across different systems complicates the process. Toth and Associates, Inc. recently shared their story of how they sped up their pole data collection process and improved accuracy. Toth fielders moved from numerous imprecise tools and equipment to one efficient device with the IKE Device. And the back-office team was able to begin work quickly after the completion of fieldwork, with timely and accurate data seamlessly uploaded to IKE Office Pro. With this approach, Toth improved GIS data accuracy and has been able to correct data mismatches and discrepancies. They also captured a wide array of data that they previously didn’t have access to. In addition to the previously barebones KMZ data files, KML exports with annotated pole and mid-span photos have empowered Toth to deliver added value to customers. The data also allows their customers to understand damages and failures in the field and identify unknown attachments.
