Not everyone reacts to prescription drugs in the same way. In fact, most people don't. Earlier this year, the manufacturers and distributors of the popular blood thinner Plavix were ordered to pay Hawaii $916 million for failing to disclose key information about the medication’s efficacy and safety after it was found to produce a diminished response in 30% of patients—many of whom are non-Caucasian. This was of particular interest to the state of Hawaii, as it could disproportionately affect Indigenous Polynesian communities. The reality is that over 99.9% of the population has genetic variations that impact how pharmaceutical medications are processed by the body. These patients are 34.3% more likely to end their lives because the medications metabolize too quickly to offer therapeutic benefits. Or think of the countless cancer patients who die each year not from cancer, but from the medications meant to treat it.
