Last month InBios attended the 10th World #Melioidosis Congress in Darwin Australia to meet with scientists from around the world working on the latest advancements in melioidosis research. A bacterial infection spread through contact with contaminated soil, water, or air, the disease was recently discovered in the US for the first time, spreading beyond Australia and Asia. “We are hopeful through a joint US-Australia collaboration that we’ll be putting shots in arms … in the next year or two,” said Professor David Wagner of Northern Arizona University. A team at the University of California may have found a new method of controlling the population of disease-spreading mosquitos. As male mosquitos rely on their hearing to position themselves against a mate, genetically deafened mosquitos lost their inability to reproduce. The first case of the potentially deadly strain of #mpox virus was detected in London this week. Although this patient had recently travelled to an area where the strain is more prevalent, the UKHSA is “still working” on the number of people it now must track down for contact tracing. This marks the first detection of this strain of mpox in the UK since Germany’s reported case in October.

H1N1 bird flu was recently confirmed in a pig on a backyard farm in the US, marking the first swine detection of the disease in the country. Pigs are “a particular concern for the spread of bird flu because they can become co-infected with bird and human viruses,” potentially leading to the creation of more viruses for humans. The USDA has stated there is no risk to the nation’s pork supply at this time, and risk for bird flu to the general public remains low.
