Engineered Pavement Foundations: Ingios is designing, testing, and optimizing the concrete pavement foundation layers for the proposed inlay project on I-35 to achieve a pavement design life of 100+ years. Ingios is working for the Iowa DOT with support from the FHWA TPF (5)-478: Demonstration to Advance New Pavement Technologies Pooled Fund. This project deploys emerging technologies to increase pavement performance. Gabe Nelson states, “We have partnered with Iowa DOT to develop pavement foundation solutions that increase pavement life. Our engineered foundation solution optimizes material selection based on performance, cost, and sustainability. Working with the Iowa DOT on projects with the potential for very high ROI is exciting.” The process of designing an engineered pavement foundation for this project involves: 1. Characterizing the existing foundation materials, 2. Evaluating the existing pavement layers for recycling into the new engineered foundation, 3. Testing the foundation performance before construction to verify the achievement of the design modulus, 4. Developing a construction quality performance specification and 5. Documenting e-compaction geospatial results over 100% of the pavement foundation to assess long-term pavement performance. We are wrapping up the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center (CP Tech Center) Indiana DOT e-Compaction demonstration this week by mapping the resilient modulus of the AASHTO 53 aggregate base. We had to move quickly to get results ahead of paving! Great work, Karter Ewing , on completing the mapping! The information from this project will allow the geotechnical, construction, and pavement project teams to analyze the aggregate base's resilient modulus compared to the underlying cement-stabilized subgrade resilient modulus. The concrete pavement foundation results will also be compared to similar demonstration projects completed at two other Indiana DOT projects, MnROAD I-94, several Iowa DOT projects, and a Pennsylvania DOT project. #pavementfoundations , #ecompaction , #quality , #resilientpavement , #concretepavement

We were pleased to work with the Indiana DOT this week on the pavement foundation e-Compaction demonstration. This took place on the I-70/Mt Comfort Road to SR 9 project east of Indianapolis. Milestone Contractors LP is building the pavement foundation for this project, which incorporates cement-treated subgrade layers to improve resilient modulus. These pavements are designed to provide long-term performance to withstand heavy truck traffic's current and future demands. Pavement engineers measure the pavement foundation k-value or resilient modulus before paving to validate design inputs. This video illustrates modulus measurement using e-Compaction. When the modulus is too low or variable, pavement fatigue life is reduced.
