Now that the Cedar Fair / Six Flags merger of was equals was finalized on July 1, 2024, what if anything does this merger mean to the global industry and the European leisure market? Well, it is fair to say that America has always been the window on things to come around the world in leisure markets, and Europe is the first stop. But the global leisure markets are maturing just like the USA. In fact, the European leisure scene is maturing a little faster than the rest of the global markets because Europe was the second international market to begin developing after the USA.

Will we see USA companies making forays into Europe? Or will we see the larger European theme park operators begin the process of starting the roll- up and the merging of large leisure operations? I think this will be the case in the future.

The Orlando tourism market continues to grow annually outpacing every other city in the United States. Tourism to Orlando in 2023 exceeded 74 million people! The tourism growth rate is expected to grow from 18.7% currently to over 21% by 2027. The second largest tourist city in America is Las Vegas, an adult-oriented playground, which draws 42 million per year, not a family conducive market. So, Orlando is the 500-pound gorilla as it relates to family tourism, and Florida is and remains Disney’s center of the universe (not to be confused with Universal’s Epic Universe!).

Yesterday, Peta made an incredibly idiotic and stupid request to Chance Rides to stop producing Carousel Rides / Merry Go Rounds with horses and other animals. THE TRAINING AND SKILLS GAP IMPACT

The leisure and amusement industry has always implemented successful training programs. For decades, our programs included hiring young people that demonstrated potential, with the intention of grooming them to rise through the ranks and be rewarded with management positions. We taught standard operating procedures and used methods such as classroom-style training, shadowing an upper-level employee, role play scenarios, and even graded testing to assure knowledge.

We implemented follow-up processes to reinforce knowledge, staff went through extensive on-the-job training, and adjustments were made if the employee did not perform as expected. This process often took weeks and months. It was a way for our park managers to know that employees were being primed to take over key management positions when the time came. As we all know, the Covid pandemic has had a significant impact on our industry’s hiring and training programs, not only our theme park industry but the restaurant and hospitality industry in general. I have spoken to many colleagues recently who are in top management positions and who have expressed concerns over a “training and skills gap” that was generated by the pandemic.

How did this happen? I believe several important factors contributed to this decline of employee training during the pandemic.
