Big news out of the HC Data space: 23andMe has announced it will be shutting down its therapeutics development division. The company is now on the look out for buyers in order to rehome its in-house pipeline of DNA-informed immuno-oncology antibody drugs. The major focus of 23andMe will now be placed on the personalized DNA and ancestry tests that first helped launch the company into the limelight. They will also continue to provide their telehealth platforms and research services to other drugmakers in the space. If the proposed acquisition does take place it raises many questions not only for consumers but also for those in the pharma, and regulatory spaces. What goes into acquiring such large, global datasets? What safeguarding measure must be implemented to ensure correct handling and use of the data once aquired? Above all else it raises the question, how can this already gathered data be used? Will the buyers adhere to solely using the data in ways authorized by the huge consumer base that have submitted their DNA? With these changes the company has stated it will layoff up to 40% of its staff as it continues to repivot and change focus. My team and I at Invenia Group are currently working extensively across the Genetics, Drug Development, and Healthcare Data space throughout the UK, Europe, and North America.
