"We're joined by Nic Humphries, the Senior Partner and Executive Chairman of Hg, which is one of the leading software investors in Europe. Nic is intimately familiar with Visma, given Hg owns over 50% of the business and has been invested for over 17 years. Hg initially invested as part of a take-private transaction in 2006 at just a $450 million valuation and based upon the latest recap completed in December, today, the business is valued at over $21 billion."

Our teacher today is Harvard Business School legend, Andre Perold. Part of our vision for Art of Investing is to shine a light on some of the world’s leading teachers - not hacks like me and Paul Buser but REAL, PhD-wielding academics. And if there were a Mount Rushmore for investing faculty, I don’t know who the other 3 would be (def. Ben Graham, prob. Jack McDonald) but without question Andre’s handsome mug would be on it. 

Born and raised in South Africa, Andre taught at HBS for over 30 years, earning numerous awards for both his research and teaching excellence, culminating in being voted by the student body as the school's most outstanding professor in a Business Week survey.  

If you were an aspiring investor attending HBS, Andre’s class felt like the ONLY class that mattered. Of course, when I showed up there nearly 20 years ago, I found out that Andre would be on sabbatical to co-found HighVista Strategies, a now leading investment firm he manages with ~ $10 Billion of AUM and focused on investing in structurally inefficient opportunities across both public and private markets. 😕 

In this session, Andre deconstructs the concept of compounding in a way that only he can, with an appreciation for both the academic and practical components. 

Personally, it was such a privilege for Paul and I to have Andre join us in class. For us, he represents the pinnacle of investor-teachers. It was also just a terrific way to synthesize and close out our fall semester on campus.
