KAAN Architecten is a Netherlands based architectural firm, operating globally. We merge practical and academic expertise within the fields of architecture, urbanism, research, and strategy. 

The Rotterdam studio, led by Kees Kaan, Vincent Panhuysen, Dikkie Scipio consist of an international team of architects, landscape architects, urban planners, engineers, and graphic designers. 

EXPERTISE
KAAN Architecten operates across multiple platforms; we believe cross pollination between projects & disciplines is essential in fostering a critical debate within the studio, which prevents a rush to the routine and obvious. This process allows the studio to distribute and share expertise.

Our projects transcend scale & type: residential buildings and offices, retail to theaters, museums and buildings for the health and education. We actively work with both the public and private sector.
Project teams are becoming increasingly multidisciplinary.  We initiate and participate in such teams and have been a strong partner in numerous successful collaborations.

Antonio Ortiz (Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos) is leading the course "Interventions on Existing Buildings," a professional gathering at Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo organized by the Santander Fundación. The course will take place from September 2–4 in Santander, Spain. 

Kees Kaan will be a speaker at the event and will deliver a presentation in which he will discuss the importance of heritage from different perspectives. He will join a distinguished panel that includes David Chipperfield (David Chipperfield Architects), Rafael Moneo (RAFAEL MONEO ARQUITECTO SL), Jordi Garcés (JORDI GARCES ENRIC SORIA ARQUITECTES SA), Gabriel Cabrero and Román San Emeterio-Pedraja.

We are looking for a Dutch-speaking Medior BIM Architect.

For our Rotterdam office (Netherlands), we are looking for an experienced architect with good detailing, communication and BIM skills to work at medium and large scale projects in the Netherlands and abroad.

Requirements:
– Master’s degree in architecture
– 3-5 years of experience in design development.
– excellent computer skills with demonstrable experience in Revit (documenting BIM model extracts through all design stages is a plus)
– experience in later design stages (DO, TO) is required
– fluency in written and spoken Dutch
– strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to work in a team
– pro-active and motivated
– in possession of a valid permit and work visa

While we wish everyone a great summer, we'd like to share our latest construction updates on three of our ongoing projects.

SPOT, Amsterdam: Our project in the Hondsrugpark area is progressing swiftly. Comprising four building sections, SPOT will offer 390 apartments across three residential towers, including social housing, mid-market rentals, and units for sale. One residential floor is being completed every six days.

FRESH, Eindhoven: Steady progress is being made on the construction of De Caai. Our tower FRESH will be among five towers housing 700 residences on the former milk factory site. FRESH is unwrapped of its scaffoldings from the top down. 

Education Centre University of Groningen: The final details are being completed on the Education Centre University of Groningen. The building is projected to be finished within a month, ready to house over 2000 students and staff for the new school year.

This event, held in Santander from September 2nd to 4th, will delve into the growing field of architectural interventions on existing buildings.

JUMP: A vision of urban vitality and sustainable design principles.

Located at the intersection of diverse urban areas in Aubervilliers, Paris and commissioned by ICADE, KAAN Architecten designed a building that connects two green zones, “Place du Front Populaire” and the urban forest of “Parc Icade des Portes de Paris”. With its colossal landing, JUMP has established itself as the central point of convergence in the area. The building integrates a hotel, offices, retail spaces, and parking. The design embraces the area's eclectic architecture and enhances the dynamism of this urban area served by Metro Line 12.

Rising 30 meters on a 45 x 90-meter footprint, JUMP integrates two west-facing voids with gardens that connect "Place du Front Populaire" and "Parc Icade des Portes de Paris". These voids provide entry points for offices and terraces for restaurants. The eastern façade is segmented into five volumes by four sky-reflecting cuts. A transparent public plinth links "Rue de la Garance" with "Rue des Fillettes", revealing gardens and neighbouring buildings. To the north, the hotel volume, and to the south, the office volume, contrast dense urbanity with green space. Loggias on the top floors soften the building's rigidity, while retail, lobbies, and terraces connect the building to its surroundings at ground and roof levels.

The choice of low-carbon materials and the integration of reused components by KAAN Architecten reduced the carbon footprint by nearly 30% compared to the Carbon 1 threshold of the E+C- label. The overall Greenhouse gas emissions stand at 1124 kgCO2eq/m², with 842 kgCO2eq/m² attributed to Construction Products and Energy Consumption. 

JUMP is a forward-thinking, sustainable building that enhances its urban environment. Its adaptable design meets current and future needs, demonstrating KAAN Architecten’s approach to thriving while addressing environmental challenges.

Museum Paleis Het Loo by KAAN Architecten nominated for Prix Versailles 2024: The World’s Most Beautiful Museums

For the first time in its history, the Prix Versailles, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, is unveiling the World’s Most Beautiful Museums List for 2024: seven newly opened or reopened museums that simultaneously serve creativity, the reflection of local heritage and ecological efficiency, and that leave extraordinary imprints on their environments.

They will all compete for three 2024 World Titles – Prix Versailles, Interior and Exterior – whose laureates will be announced at UNESCO Headquarters by late November. 

Jérôme Gouadain, Secretary General of the Prix Versailles, emphasizes the significance of museums in fostering intercultural dialogue and providing immersive experiences. He states, "By creating the World’s Most Beautiful Museums List, we wanted to emphasize the importance of wonder, which elevates the human gaze and allows us to be surprised."

Congratulations on reaching the milestone of 1.000.000 visitors at the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten Antwerpen (KMSKA)! 

This impressive achievement, just 21 months after reopening, is a testament to the museum's appeal and quality. KAAN Architecten admires the dedication and effort to ensure that every visitor has a unique and inspiring experience. The museum has established itself as a cultural hotspot where everybody feels welcome.

KAAN Architecten to renovate the headquarters of the National Bank of Belgium 

The National Bank of Belgium has announced its plans to renovate its headquarters by 2030, aiming to create a modern and sustainable workspace that brings its staff together under one roof in Brussels. Following a public tender, the project's design was awarded to KAAN Architecten and LOW architecten (the Statuur consortium).

The Bank's operations are currently spread across multiple buildings in the heart of Brussels, no longer meeting the desired operational and energy efficiency standards. Aligned with the Bank's commitment to social responsibility and sustainability, the consolidation of staff into a single building, NBB1, is slated to be completed by approximately 2030. The new headquarters will enable the National Bank to considerably reduce its occupied surface area from the current 217,000 m2 to about 80,000 m2. The decision to consolidate is further bolstered by remote working practices, reducing the need for workstations. 

The renovation of the NBB1 building will transform it into a cutting-edge smart building. The project's key objectives are to improve energy performance and optimise the use of space. By implementing innovative and sustainable solutions, such as advanced smart lighting, ventilation, and heating systems, the Bank aims to achieve substantial energy savings. Furthermore, the renovated headquarters will offer the Bank's staff a modern and pleasant working environment that caters to the demands of the changing work practices.

The NBB's ambitious renovation plan reflects its commitment to combining contemporary elements with preserving historical values. The result will be a recognisable headquarters that embodies sustainability, openness, and beauty while retaining its timeless grandeur.
