🛰 As reported by the BBC, Kayrros analysis revealed one of the worst methane leaks ever recorded took place last year at a remote well in Kazakhstan. This massive methane release was previously denied by the owner of the well and dismissed as ‘water vapour.’ Our analysis has now been verified by the Netherlands Institute for Space Research and the Polytechnic University of Valencia, and confirmed by BBC Verify. Based on our findings, 127,000 tonnes of the gas escaped when a blowout started a fire that raged for over six months. The environmental impact of the leak is equivalent to the emissions of 717,000 petrol cars for a year. 🛰️ Kayrros and the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center ( KAPSARC ) were pleased to unveil a groundbreaking new study detailing vast discrepancies in methane emissions estimates across five major Gulf oil and gas producers: Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, and the UAE. Our award-winning, flagship product, Methane Watch, informed by KAPSARC’s extensive regional knowledge, revealed that Saudi Arabia and the UAE stand out for effective methane management, showing the lowest methane emission intensities per barrel of oil equivalent. Our collaboration with KAPSARC also found: • Major gaps between different data sources, with satellite estimates in many cases showing far higher emissions than national reports. • Saudi Arabia’s methane emissions were 67% lower than the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates, while Iraq’s were 72% lower than the EDGAR estimate. Kayrros’ technology, married to KAPSARC’s regional expertise, is helping to set a standard for methane monitoring in the Gulf region. 📑 Kayrros co-founder and Chief Analyst Antoine H. was a contributor to the second Innovation for Cool Earth Forum (ICEF) Artificial Intelligence for Climate Change Mitigation Roadmap. The report seeks to answer the question whether AI can help guide the energy sector on its decarbonisation pathway and accelerate the transition to a low-emission economy. In this second edition, 26 co-authors built on last year’s roadmap, also adding six new chapters and offering more actionable recommendations for each chapter. In Chapter 12, Antoine writes that historically, GHG data has been fragmented and sometimes incomplete, with significant time lags, limiting the ability to design effective mitigation strategies. 📑 There’s been alarm following the release of a Cornell University report on the greenhouse gas footprint for LNG exported from the US. The report showed that US LNG is dirtier than coal. Over a 20-year period, LNG produces about 33% more emissions CO2 equivalent due to the enormous warming power of methane. We at Kayrros have been saying this for some time now. Thanks to AI and satellite imagery, we've been able to quantify methane emissions like never before. The importance of this issue cannot be overstated. Since lifting its ban on LNG exports, the US has become the world’s top LNG exporter, a trend accelerated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. And unlike coal, which is being phased out in many countries, LNG is seen by many as a destination fuel to counter-balance the intermittent nature of solar and wind. The good news is that our technology tells us where the main leaks are, and they are easy to fix at almost no cost. The bad news is that no progress has been made in the last few years: our study on the Global Methane Pledge, unveiled at Climate Week New York and widely reported in the media, showed many of the signatories, including the US, were spewing increasingly large amounts of methane into the atmosphere. 🛰️ Recent greenhouse-gas allowance auctions run by the Western Climate Initiative (WCI) have seen a 22.4% plunge in the price of California Carbon Allowances (CCA) –down to $30.24 in August from $37.02 in June. All the allowances on offer have found a buyer, however. This shows there’s still strong interest in CCAs, despite uncertainties about the market’s future. On the one hand, the market regulator, the California Air Resource Board (CARB), has yet to provide more clarity on future CCA supply. On the other hand, Kayrros has measured a drop in demand which won’t help lift the price. ☑️ Though vehicle miles traveled (VMTs) remain near pre-Covid highs, associated transportation-fuel emissions have dropped in 2024. This is likely due to both the rising market share of renewable fuels and the growing popularity of electric vehicles. ☑️ With alternatives to carbon-intensive fuels becoming more widely available, California gasoline and diesel use will continue to erode, driving emissions lower. ☑️ If the WCI market doesn’t cut supply accordingly, prices will have nowhere to go but down.
