Klang Games is an entertainment studio exploring the future of humanity through various forms of media. They aim to present deep, meaningful subjects in a captivating and entertaining way for all ages. At the heart of Klang is Seed, a large-scale, persistent virtual world that aims to redefine the MMO landscape and have a positive impact on our species. Klang Games aspires to bring people together through engaging media experiences and building strong communities.

Klang is an independent game development studio based in Berlin. It was founded by three Icelanders in the spring of 2013.

In July 2015, Klang launched its first project, ReRunners: Race for the World, for iOS and Android devices, which was extremely well-received by both the gaming press and the gaming community.

Now, Klang is working on its next project, Seed, a simulation MMO utilizing SpatialOS technology.

Our “Who’s this Klanger?” series continues on! This week we chatted with our Lead People Business Partner, Kata. 🌸 🌼   

What is your favorite part about working as the Lead People Business Partner? 🌸 🌼  

I like the fact that my position gets me in contact with a lot of different people with diverse perspectives. In my current role, I have touchpoints with all departments, which gives me a better understanding of what challenges they have and how the game is made.   So, my favorite part of the role is definitely the people that I am working with, as well as the fact that I am constantly learning. To be honest, this is one of the main reasons that I’ve stayed here for almost four years. I always find something new to learn about and work on. 

 
What excites you most about SEED? 🌸 🌼  

I am most excited about how SEED is focused on collaboration and bringing people together. As you can see it’s the same things that make me excited about my role (collaborating with other people and finding other perspectives). Also, coming from a design background I really like the aesthetic of SEED. This was very attractive to me during the hiring process and was a big part of why I decided to work at Klang. I like that it is a very creative company whose aesthetics resonate with me. 

What do you like to do in your free time? 🌸 🌼  

I have two dogs and I really enjoy spending time with them outside, so in my free time I like to go on long walks with them. I also really enjoy making clothes, mainly for myself and some of my friends to have something fun to wear when we go out. Not only is the creation process rewarding, but it’s also a lot less expensive than buying clothes in shops. Lastly, one of my favorite things in the whole world is listening to and dancing to music, so I also really like to go out and party. And Berlin is a great place for this.

For many of us, October marks a shift in the seasons, with a new crispness in the air, and the anticipation of heaps of Halloween candy. However, it also holds significant importance as Mental Health Month. At Klang, this is a time when we pause to reflect, raise awareness, and work towards dispelling the numerous stigmas that still, unfortunately, surround mental health issues. 🍂

What is Mental Health? 🧠

A lot of the time, people mistake mental health for the absence of mental disorders or illnesses. 
However, it is really much more than that. When we actually break it down, mental health refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, act, handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Like so many things in life, mental health is a spectrum, ranging from flourishing well-being to severe conditions that make it hard to get out of bed in the morning. 

How to Give Support 🫂

Now, for the big question of how to give support to someone struggling with mental health. The true answer is that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. That being said, we believe that understanding and empathy are key. It can really mean a lot, simply to listen actively without casting judgment, offering a safe space for the other person to express their feelings. Plus, if you feel like things are more serious than you have the ability to help with, encourage them to seek professional help. This doesn’t mean that you failed as a friend, but that you recognize that sometimes people need more experienced support.  

Mental Health Month at Klang 🧘

This October, we are kicking off Mental Health Awareness Month with a bang! Throughout the month different Klangers will be sharing their knowledge and experiences with each other through hosting events in areas like meditation, journaling, yoga, and open discussions about mental health topics. There will also be a handful of mindful meals provided by Klang, which will give Klangers the opportunity to enjoy some healthy food together (because yes, food quality does impact our mental well-being!) Overall we hope to create space for Klangers to have candid conversations and share about their mental health journeys with each other. We are looking forward to seeing how Mental Health Month unfolds!

For some people (and a lot of Klangers) moving to Berlin is a no-brainer. However, there is often one difficulty that new Berliners face: finding long-term housing. In this week’s blog post, we are diving into our own personal tips for finding a flat in Berlin. We hope that this post will demystify the whole process so that it seems a little less overwhelming. 🏠 🌆

Have all your Documents Ready 📃 

While flat hunting often resembles more a competitive race than seeking a basic human right, preparation can make all the difference between securing a dream home or losing out to someone else. Having all of your necessary documents ready before embarking on your search is not just recommended, it’s really kind of essential. It streamlines the application process, showcases your seriousness to landlords, and reduces the lag between finding a flat you love and staking your claim.

Short-Term Housing First 🏘️

It can be kind of difficult to find long-term housing right off the bat in Berlin. Because of this, we recommend looking for short-term housing first, that way you can have a place to settle in and get your feet in the city while you continue your search, as well as doing important things like formally registering in Berlin (which is also known as getting an Anmeldung). It is essential to make sure that your temporary housing can give you this ability to register, as well as provide a signed Wohnungsgeberbestätigung document (which proves that you live in your new flat) from the landlord or agency. 

Go Straight to Real Estate Agencies 🧑💼 

OK so listen up, here is a pro tip from our own Engineering Manager, Nacho: When searching for a flat, consider contacting real estate companies directly. Nacho swears that this was the key to his quick and successful flat-searching experience! This strategy gives you an advantage by circumventing the intense competition in Berlin’s rental market. By going straight to the source, you can skip crowded apartment viewings and improve your chances of securing your own dream flat! In order to find real estate agents in your preferred area of Berlin, we recommend doing a quick Google search. Then, simply pick up the phone and tell them what you are looking for.  

Um Hilfe Bitten (Ask for Help) 💬

Navigating the apartment search can be daunting, and throwing in a language barrier can make things feel even more overwhelming. We know that reading and responding to listings in German takes some extra work for expats. And what’s more, it’s not really a secret that Berlin landlords seem to kind of favor German-speaking applicants. To enhance your prospects, we suggest enlisting the assistance of a friend or colleague who is fluent in German to help you navigate the rental process.

So, in honor of this exciting new change, we are going to be exploring Madrid through some blog posts - from nightlife to the music scene, and everything in between! Tapas Galore 

No visit to Madrid is complete without indulging in the beloved tradition of tapas. While the origins of this delicious tradition are still hotly debated, the love of tapas is not. These small, flavorful dishes are meant to be shared amongst friends, and Madrid is home to countless tapas bars that serve up both classic and experimental options. Whether it’s patatas bravas (crispy potatoes with spicy sauce), jamón ibérico (cured ham), or more contemporary creations like mini-burgers with foie gras, you’ll find something to tantalize your taste buds on every corner. 🥘 🍫 

The Mercados  

The beauty of Madrid’s food scene continues in its bustling food markets, such as Mercado de San Miguel and Mercado de la Cebada, which are sensory playgrounds for food enthusiasts. These markets are filled with stalls offering fresh produce, seafood, cheeses, and an array of prepared dishes. Grab a glass of Spanish wine and sample your way through the market, savoring local specialties and soaking in the lively atmosphere. 🥘 🍫 

 Cocido Madrileño

For a taste of traditional Madrid, make sure you try cocido madrileño. This hearty chickpea-based stew features a rich broth filled with vegetables and various cuts of meat. It’s a comforting dish that has been cherished by Madrileños for generations. While it is most often served in winter, some restaurants offer it all year round. Many restaurants (Casa Carola and La Bola being some local favorites) serve their unique takes on cocido, so be sure to try it and see which version becomes your favorite. 🥘 🍫

In today's “Who’s This Klanger?” we get to know QA star, Weronika! We talk about everything, from their enthusiasm about Seedlings, to their love of animals.  🌱 🐇

How did you find your way to Klang?

While I was looking for universities that offered game design I stumbled upon an advertisement for a Junior QA position at Klang. I thought: Perfect, I know nothing but I am interested! This happened at about midnight and by five in the morning I had read up on Klang, drafted my CV and cover letter, and sent everything in. It was very exciting, and now here I am! 🌱 🐇

What is your favorite part of working in QA?

I mainly just love how many different things there are to be done. One day I will be testing a list of tags for every item in the game, the next day I will be testing a completely new system for the modular buildings. I always have something new to do, which is exciting. I never get bored! 🌱 🐇

What excites you most about SEED?

I’m really excited by the fact that it is a simulation of humanity. I’m really into games like this. I love the fact that the characters get a personality of their own. It’s not that the player creates the personality of the Seedlings like in other games. Seedlings develop their own personalities depending on what they do, and they genuinely start feeling more and more alive with every development. I have to say this is my favorite part about SEED. 🌱 🐇
