Patient Self Scheduling is one of the highest priorities for patients. Here are some things we have learned today at our KLAS Research Patient & Consumer Innovation Summit:

Patient scheduling 

Start anywhere. Go anywhere. 

This is a top Priority for patients. 

KLAS is seeing better alignment between providers and patients pertaining to self scheduling.  

The inability to schedule online is impacting where patients select care. 

It’s hard but is needed. 
The key to improvement is change management not new technology. 

Pick your battles. It will be a long war. 

Medical leadership is needed to help with clinician resistance.

Day 1 of our KLAS Research  Patient and Consumer Innovation Summit. 
We intentionally started with a patient panel. 
Here are some of my favorite learnings from them: 

I want to be heard & Understood. 
Do the vulnerable have a loud enough voice? 
I want to be asked if I comprehend. 

Ideas 
Make wording on discharge papers more patient friendly. 

My care is normally decided  by my Employer, my provider, and my payer. My voice is usually not included. 
But that is changing in part from the consumer giants coming into healthcare. 

Technology does not champion everyone. There are gaps in comprehension and access. 

Quality of care can not be linked to access of technology. 

Ability to share with information with other systems. 
Please find a away for patients to have their records shared. 

I would first tell my health system 
Thank you  

Please don’t forget the elderly. 

Allow those outside of your health system to have access. 

If you allow patients to influence and design the technology they will become deep adopters and advocates. 

Tell ICU has been huge. 

Don’t give patients their data on CDs! They can’t read it!

Asynchronous communication that is responded to quickly is valuable for patients. 

Patients want education and community. 

Dealing with my payer and the prior authorization process was emotionally  the most painful part of having brain cancer. 

What is working? 
I like when the clinician cares and we know that they understand what is happening. 
We feel heard and believed. 

Healthcare is about trust. 
Not only that we need to trust them but they need to trust us.

The K2 2023 Summit included breakouts with attendees to discuss challenges in the payer/provider space. A key takeaway from the summit is that healthcare providers can feel that “payer requirements, rules and policies can be a moving target.” Suggestions to improve this included both the payer and provider being aligned on operational standards across organizations by claims teams, contracting teams, and IT teams who took ownership over operational efficiency; issues like using variable codes could be addressed, and that would improve denial rates.

Alignment of Workflow and Data Sharing Leads to Improved Efficiency

KLAS Research has found that healthcare providers with good workflows and bidirectional data sharing have much quicker claim turnaround times, fewer coding errors, duplicate claims, and improved quality measures and risk adjustment calculations. In addition, healthcare providers who have an awareness of the regulatory landscape have improved partnerships with payers.
