The Hometown Heroes Survivor Benefits Act, which became law 21 years ago, extended federal benefits to public safety officers, including police officers, firefighters, and other first responders, who die of heart attack or stroke while on duty. More than 500 families of firefighters who died in the line of duty due to these causes have benefited from the law. But the law would not have been done if it couldn't have been done without a chance meeting at a pizzeria between Chief Michael Williams Jr and his congressional representative. Chief Williams was honored this week at the Harry S. Truman Foundation's 18th Truman Legacy Symposium in Key West. Victor Stagnaro , CEO of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) , presented the award which Knox sponsored. Also on the stage honoring Mike were Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell , U.S. Fire Administrator; Ron Siarnicki , Executive Director Emeritus, NFFF, Bill Webb , Executive Director of the Congressional Fire Services Institute ; Lorraine Carli , Vice President of the NFPA ; Chief Kevin Quinn , Board Member of the National Volunteer Fire Council ; and Dr. Denise Smith, Director of National Fire Data and Research Center for the U.S. Fire Administration . Knox and the Abington Township Fire Department (PA) collaborated to host an evening workshop that included five engine companies that are transitioning to the Knox eLock System (Abington, McKinley, Weldon, Edge Hill, and Roslyn). The workshop was followed with a day session with fire officials and the township administration. In addition to transitioning KnoxBoxes with eCores, the Township plans to implement a Knox Document Cabinet with eCore program with retail properties, to insert master keys, fobs, access cards and pre-plan documents. Knox was a proud sponsor of this week's 76th Annual Florida Fire Prevention Conference, put on by the Florida Fire Marshals and Inspectors Association . Knox led a panel discussion which examined the state of electric vehicle charging stations in Florida, how codes will play an impact, what AHJs are doing locally, and more. The Kox Remote Power Box was also discussed as one of the "tools to have in your tool box" when it comes to remotely and securely shutting off power to an EV charging station during an emergency. Knox would like to thank the panelists for their time. Knox is in Oklahoma City for the 26th Annual Campus Fire and Life Safety Forum. The event kicked off with a keynote address by Keith Bryant , Oklahoma State Fire Marshal, and opening comments from Dominick Brown , Chief of Prevention/Fire Marshal for the Oklahoma City Fire Department. The event is organized by the CCFS C. and examines the latest trends and issues relating to codes, education, fire and life safety and risk reduction for colleges and universities. The Forum also marks the last event for Justin Daniels , who has served as the CCFS President for the past six years.

As the U.S. gears up for the 2024 elections, national tensions are reaching unprecedented heights. Political dissatisfaction, economic strain, and international conflicts have created an environment ripe for civil unrest. As many cities prepare for civil unrest in their communities, every effort should be taken to protect fire and life safety systems.
