This week, our co-founder Dieuwertje Drexhage had the opportunity to share our mission with fellow healthcare enthusiasts at the World Health Assembly in Geneva. As part of the Health Innovation Exchange - HIEx, we connected with inspiring innovators, mission-driven investors, and dedicated healthcare policymakers and organisations, all united by a passion for improving access to sustainable healthcare.

Today marks the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, a moment to raise awareness about a pressing issue affecting over 2 million women worldwide 👩🌎

#ObstetricFistula is a maternal condition caused by the inaccessibility to timely quality healthcare during prolonged and obstructed labor. 

This condition brings profound physical, emotional, and socioeconomic challenges to the women affected. Surgery remains their sole treatment option.

At LAYCO, we are committed to breaking the cycle of obstetric fistula with vela®, our innovative solution designed for global use and aimed at preventing this devastating condition. 

But we can't do it alone. We're proud to join hands with obstetricians and gynaecologists around the world to end obstetric fistula.

Farewell, 2023! We want to take a moment to celebrate the significant milestones of this year as it has been an amazing year for LAYCO 🚀 

🌍 The usability of vela®️ was validated across 5 hospitals in Kenya, providing invaluable insights for our design improvements

🌱 A preliminary Life-Cycle Analysis showed that with the usage of vela®️ CO2-eq emissions can be reduced by around 40% compared to disposable alternatives

🏆 Our co-founder Dieuwertje Drexhage was honoured with the Health Pioneer of the Year award, receiving the prestigious prize of the Nederlands Albert Schweitzer Fonds from Marion Koopmans

♻️ The SBIR tender of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) | Partner in Sustainable Development helped us to fund our research to produce and develop our reusable and user-friendly vacuum extractor with locally recycled plastic in Uganda

🌐 Alongside valued partner SehaMed™, we showcased vela® at the renowned MEDICA - Leading International Trade Fair, where we connected with distributors from all our the world.

👶 Our latest prototype, featuring enhanced functionalities, underwent reprocessing assessments by a sterilisation expert and usability validations by 83 gynaecologists across 7 Dutch hospitals.

🎙️Co-founder Thom Weustink shared the story of LAYCO at TEDxAmsterdam, amplifying our message of why sustainable and accessible healthcare is a necessity.
