We excited to announce the completion of the final Adaptation SME Accelerator Program (ASAP) technical assistance facility project. Over the last 8 months, we've worked with EW Tech to develop and deploy an off-grid mobile application of their water filtration technology to enhance water security and resilience for communities vulnerable to water quality issues due to climate change. The solution has potential applications for off-grid locations and in response to natural disasters. A pilot location was selected in Tuchín, Colombia where 335 adults and over 700 children (from the village and surrounding community who attend school in Tuchín) are benefiting from over 2000L per day of clean drinking water.

Impacts to clean water is one of the many challenges due to climate change that we face and requires solutions like the one developed by EW Tech in order to help communities adapt and become more resilient.

We're proud to announce the completion of another Adaptation SME Accelerator Program (ASAP) technical assistance facility project. Over the last 8 months, we've worked with Kitovu Technology Company to pilot the deployment of technology building a resilient agricultural ecosystem for smallholder farmers in Billiri, Gombe State, Nigeria. In total, 543 farmers were provided training, and 400 tons of grains were stored with a 20% reduction in post-harvest losses, saving an estimated $23,000 in value while also increasing the value per ton of grain sold that participating farmers received.

As climate impacts continue to affect agricultural production, solutions like the ones provided by Kitovu will increasingly be needed to bolster climate and economic resilience of smallholder farmers around the world.

Water is an essential component to life and a critical resource for humanity. On a basic level, its needed for daily hydration, cooking, and for sanitation purposes. And that’s not including the need for water in critical industries including agriculture, industrial, power generation and other uses. 2 billion people globally do not have access to clean drinking water, including 1.2 billion lacking even basic drinking water services with 8 out of 10 of these people living in rural areas. Providing access to clean drinking water for consumption and sanitation is a critical development goal. 

Climate change threatens to complicate this. Changing weather patterns due to climate change (temperature and precipitation) causing droughts, flooding, and water scarcity; saltwater intrusion into ground water; and a general decline in the quality of water will increasingly become a challenge to provide clean drinking water and sanitation globally over the next few decades. Recognizing this challenge, it is critical to invest in entrepreneurs and innovations that are able to reach these vulnerable communities and provide critical services to build resilience to climate change and improve their quality of life by reducing sickness and disease resulting from contaminated drinking water. 

The Adaptation SME Accelerator Program (ASAP) was established by The Lightsmith Group, with funding and support from the Global Environment Facility and Conservation International to identify and scale up small and medium enterprises #smes in developing markets that are developing commercial solutions to address the impacts of #climatechange.  As a part of this engagement in 2022, ASAP ran the Adaptation Solutions Accelerator with Village Capital to provide a cohort of 18 SMEs from Africa, Asia, and Latin America & the Caribbean a program of capacity building, mentorship, and technical assistance & expertise. At the end of the Accelerator, three companies were awarded Technical Assistance Facility grants to implement specific pilot proposals to develop and deploy critical climate adaptation technologies. 

In Latin America, the ASAP Technical Assistance Facility was awarded to EW Tech to develop and deploy an off-grid and mobile application of their water filtration technology. Over the last 6 months, the team at EW Tech have been hard at work developing this mobile unit which was tested and benchmarked against the national water standards of Colombia. 

Today, we're happy to announce that over the next few weeks, the prototype will be installed in a water challenged community in Tuchín, Colombia and supply 400 liters of clean drinking water per hour to 620 people (179 families) including 380 school children. 

Stay tuned to the EW Tech page for updates over the next few weeks detailing the development and installation of the prototype and the community where the pilot will be located. A full case study will be released in July.
