Are you ready for Series A or should you be raising a Seed?

Here is some great data from Carta on the different rounds and steps in valuation.

How much runway do startups need to raise in 2024? 💸


Old advice was primary rounds every 18-24 months, but as the data from Carta below suggests, these rounds are now taking longer to get done. 

Current median time between a seed and an A round: 2.1 years

Current time between A and B: 2.26 years. 

Companies the raised their Series A round in Q1 2024 had been waiting about 44% longer than companies who raised an A in Q1 2021.

So, the question must be asked: what do investors think about runway in 2024? 

1️⃣ - The path to profitability is more important than ever. Demonstrating efficient growth is key.

2️⃣ - Ramping your burn against performance KPIs is a good way of showing strategic capital allocation.

3️⃣ - Leveraging organic growth strategies and mining data from paid strategies to avoid cannibalising the acquisition needed for growth.

The environment is tough right now, but focusing on these three points is a good way to ensure you build strong foundations.

Looking to sell your SaaS company in the near future? This is what potential acquirers want to see:

If you as a SaaS founder can provide all the data right away, it makes a great first impression. This may ultimately determine whether you close a deal or not. 

Trust me, I speak from my own experience. 

I can only encourage you to set up clean tracking of KPIs financials once at the beginning. It will pay off in the future.

Below you will find the basic data that is usually requested:

1️⃣ SaaS KPIs

Buyers prefer raw data in spreadsheet form because they want to work with those numbers. No PDFs, screenshots or the like. Otherwise, you risk creating a negative bias.

Ideally, revenue and customer movements can be provided on a monthly basis. See screenshot from ChartMogul below,.

2️⃣ Historical Financials

We typically ask for income statements of the last 3+ fiscal years (the more you can provide the better).

Big Plus: You are able to provide financial data on a monthly basis.

3️⃣ Budget / Forecast

Buyers want to know how you see the future of the company based on what you know today.

How do you see future growth? Is there a need for larger investments in the short term - e.g. for hirings, a platform rewrite, or S&M initiatives?
