It's a very special day today — it's Election Day in the US! Today, many people will go to the polls to exercise their right to vote and come away with a stronger sense of community and responsibility. In honor of this day, we want to share a little history of voting with y'all: 🗳️ 1776 - The Declaration of Independence is signed 🗳️ 1788 - The U.S. Constitution gets adopted, states granted power to establish voting rights. 🗳️ 1870 - Black men were granted the right to vote via the ratification of the 15th Amendment, but were greatly suppressed for nearly a century. 🗳️ 1920 - Women win the right to vote via the 19th Amendment, though states still restricted the voting rights of minority women. 🗳️ 1924 - Native Americans granted the right to vote via the Indian Citizenship Act, but some states continue to bar Native Americans from voting. 🗳️ 1943 - The Chinese Exclusion Act is repealed, allowing Chinese immigrants and their American-born families to become US citizens with voting rights. 🗳️ 1961 - Residents of Washington, D.C. can vote in presidential elections. 🗳️ 1964 - The 24th Amendment prohibits poll taxes in federal elections. 🗳️ 1965 - The Voting Rights Act is signed into law and enforces the 15th Amendment on a federal—not just state—level. 🗳️ 1971 - The voting age is lowered from 21 to 18 in reaction to the Vietnam War. 🗳️ 1975 - Amendments to the Voting Rights Act require districts with significant numbers of non-English-speaking votes to provide accommodations for registering and voting. 🗳️ 1984 - Polling places must be accessible for people with disabilities and the elderly according to the Voting Accessibility for the Elderly and Handicapped Act. 🗳️ 1993 - The National Voter Registration Act of 1993 is signed. DMVs must offer voter registration opportunities, states must maintain current and accurate voter registration lists. Over 30 million voters update or complete registration as a result! 🗳️ 2013 - A Supreme Court ruling in Shelby County v. Holder makes it easier to state officials to engage in voter suppression by rolling back preclearance requirements from the Voting Rights Act of 1965. As you can see, the right to vote isn't always guaranteed — and it's been hard-won by people willing to fight for it. We hope you take time today to go to the polls and exercise your right to vote. I’ve been sharing this quote like crazy these past few weeks and most people are like…I think I'm into this but also, what do you mean? First, Energy transference...everything we do is affecting other people. Think about what happens to you when someone cuts you off in traffic, speed walks past you in the grocery store, uses a tone that makes you second guess yourself. Our moods, our actions have powerful ripples across our community, culture and planet. Second, Coherence...this is a way to describe energetic organization, coherence is the opposite of frenzy, doom or chaos. Coherence is the state your body is in when you're in deep creative flow or feeling very joyful; your nervous system is at ease...compared to a chaotic environment where you may have a ton of adrenaline flowing through your body. This heightened state is super helpful in short bursts, like if you're running out of a burning building. It's not that helpful if you're trying to focus, or generally desiring to live life not in ongoing existential crisis. If you're interested in learning more, the HeartMath Institute has phenomenal work. Coherence practices are a powerful tool for everyone from children to members of the military, which you can see on their site. 3rd...Let's get tactical... It feels chaotic and scary and like a burning building for many people, regardless of the political position, the underlying energy is the same: people feel existentially afraid of what happens when one candidate wins. There's a strong pull to amplify the chaos by amplifying the worry, fear, doom, "you're wrong/I'm right" sentiments. And there's another thing we could choose: to be a node of coherence and see what happens. To offer kindness, compassion, appreciation with abandon. Here are some tactical and easy kindnesses you may want to consider: --Silently compliment everyone you walk by on the street or see on Zoom (and imagine what if someone else on your zoom or street is doing the same to you!) --When eating a meal, consider all the hands that went into bringing it to you, thank them for their help feeding you. --Let someone in in traffic --Let someone ahead of you in line. These are not small, they are transformational. Just imagine what if it was normal to assume everyone you walked by was sharing kindness with you and not analyzing you? In chaotic times like this it's a wildly brave act to remember the choices we have in how we show up in every moment and there's something other than a doom spiral possible. Let's see how we can build each other up here, I would LOVE to hear any more kindness ideas in comments to offer other ideas for what we can DO in the day. And in case it's helpful, I share free 15 minute daily zoom meditations that are a fun place to just be in a coherent field with my colleagues and friends and their friends. I'm happy to include anyone who wants to join, it's super informal :)
