Together with Austrian Airlines, we are introducing our fuel-saving AeroSHARK surface film to another aircraft type. From winter 2024, four Boeing 777-200ER aircraft of the Austrian carrier will be equipped with the sharkskin technology. 🦈✈️ 

The riblet film, jointly developed with BASF, reduces frictional resistance during flight, leading to lower kerosene consumption and CO₂ emissions on long-haul flights. As a result, total savings of approximately 2,650 metric tons of fuel and over 8,300 metric tons of CO₂ are expected over a service life of four years - comparable to taking around 46 flights off the Vienna to New York route! 🌟 

“We take our responsibility seriously and take every possible step to reduce CO₂ emissions within our flight operations. At one percent, the sharkskin’s efficiency potential may not sound like much, but in total it will save thousands of tons of CO₂ per year on long-haul flights,” says Francesco Sciortino, COO at Austrian Airlines. “Even though our Boeing 777-200ERs are in their final years of service, we take this investment to get one step closer to our CO₂ reduction targets.”  

“The rollout of the fuel-saving sharkskin technology on another aircraft type with Austrian Airlines is great news for other Boeing 777-200ER operators as well,” emphasizes Harald Gloy, COO at Lufthansa Technik. “These are the first of hopefully many more aircraft of this type that, thanks to AeroSHARK, will have lower kerosene consumption and an improved carbon footprint.”

We're excited to welcome 339 young professionals to our apprenticeship and dual study programs in Germany these days - slightly more than last year! Despite a challenging training market, we filled 94% of available positions. This year, industrial professions saw strong interest, with Hamburg filling 12% more positions. We're also introducing a new dual study program in real estate management.

We're excited to share several key leadership appointments, all promoted from within our ranks, reflecting the exceptional talent within our company:

Michael Kirstein took on the role of VP "Transformation Office" on May 1, driving our "Ambition 2030" growth program. Derrick Siebert transitioned to VP Operations Engine Services on May 15. Georg Fanta became VP Commercials Engine Services in June. Thomas Illner was appointed Managing Director & Head of Region Americas at Lufthansa Technik Component Serviceson July 1. Berit Plewinsky became VP Commercials Aircraft Component Services on July 8. Tim-Oliver Fedeler, Jens Michel, LL.M. (VUW), and Alexander Dr. Sixt stepped into their new roles on August 1: Tim-Oliver Fedeler became Managing Director of Lufthansa Technik Component Services Asia Pacific and Senior Director Product Sales & Fulfillment for this region. Jens Michel took over the role as Vice President Sales North East Asia. Dr. Alexander Sixt joined Lufthansa Technik Intercoat as Managing Director. On August 15, Fabian Nagel will start as VP Sales VIP & Special Aircraft Services, succeeding Wieland Timm, who retires in September after more than 20 years with the company.

Taking off for Love and Respect: Following last year’s successful debut, our colleagues participated once again with their own truck at the Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Hamburg yesterday. We stood united against discrimination and advocated for equal rights for LGBTQ+ individuals. Under this year's theme, "5 Minutes to 12! You and Me Against the Pressure from the Far Right," our team marched with the slogan "Taking Off for Love and Respect," emphasizing our commitment to democracy, diversity, and acceptance.

Colleagues at many other locations also launched initiatives to celebrate Pride Month: Lufthansa Technik Malta Ltd. organized a special coffee event, creating opportunities to connect and appreciate the diversity within our company. Lufthansa Technik Puerto Rico celebrated diversity during a Friends & Family Day on July 20th, highlighting the rich mix of over 15 nationalities within their team. And in Miami colleagues decorated their offices in the vibrant colors of the rainbow, hosted breakfasts gatherings and supported “Diversifly”, the official queer network of the Lufthansa Group, with their fundraising campaign in cooperation with help alliance Americas to benefit the Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), a non-profit and community-based AIDS service organization.

Our “Omni-Fi” sound experience is among the winners in the “Best of the Best: Design Concept” category and the VIP design concept “CelestialSTAR” for the BBJ 777-9 was honored in “Product Design” in this year’s design competition. The official award ceremony will be held in Singapore in October.

With the latest development of the Omni-Fi speakers, we are bringing a fully invisible sound experience for various installation positions in both VIP and business jet cabins to the market. Omni-Fi’s exclusively licensed Ring-mode Converter/Transducer technology enables an extremely sleek design that does not compromise on sound quality thanks to optimal omnidirectional dispersion. This way, Omni-Fi can not only provide passengers with a literally immersive listening experience, but it also opens up entirely new degrees-of-freedom for cabin designers, because of its installation depth of less than 20 millimeters and a weight of less than 300 grams (<0.6lb). Another big benefit: compared to classically implemented cabin speaker systems, Omni-Fi saves up to 50% weight.
 
The CelestialSTAR VIP design for the BBJ 777-9 prioritizes versatility and multifunctionality. It showcases an impressive array of stunning features and furthermore maximizes space, comfort, and incorporates traditional elements of Middle Eastern cultural heritage with a modern twist. A special light and window shade concept has been implemented throughout the cabin, giving passengers the feeling of being in their personal living room rather than on a plane at 30,000 ft, particularly important for an ultra-long range aircraft.
