This kind of post is often reserved for the end of the year, but so much has happened in the last months that we didn’t want to wait that long to celebrate before we dive straight back into autumn! 

Here’s a quick recap on what we’ve been up to in the last months: 

🔬 We marked a critical milestone with the launch of our state-of-the-art pilot plant in Lisbon at the end of last year. This facility allows us to produce single-cell protein samples, accelerating our commercialization journey. We've made leaps and bounds in scaling our microbial protein production, ensuring we meet the growing demand for sustainable and nutritious alternatives. 

🤝 Alongside the pilot plant launch, we secured a partnership with a commercial production partner. This collaboration enabled us to scale production to 1 ton/day, demonstrating our capability to make sustainable protein available at a larger scale swiftly and efficiently. 

🌍 We became the first biomass fermentation company to join Food Fermentation Europe (FFE). This membership allows us to collaborate with other industry leaders in advancing sustainable food systems and promoting the benefits of fermentation-enabled solutions. 

🐶 Teaming up with VEGDOG, we unveiled a first-of-its-kind microbial protein dog treat at the 2024 Pet Food Forum. Launching our first product – VEGDOG Pure Bites – was the culmination of hours of research, development, and collaboration. Combining our sustainable protein with hypoallergenic properties makes it the ideal snack for dogs with intolerances. This product not only offers a delicious and nutritious option for pets but also significantly reduces CO2 emissions compared to traditional protein sources.

👣 Myth busting the Carbon footprint! 👣 

We often hear that eating local and using sustainable packaging are key to reducing our carbon footprint. While these practices are important, the reality is more nuanced. 

🚛📦 Research shows that the carbon footprint of what we eat is far more significant than the footprint of how it’s packaged or transported.  

Greenhouse gas emissions from food transportation and packaging are relatively small compared to the emissions from food production itself. 

Producing a kilogram of beef emits 60 kg of CO2-equivalents, but transport only contributes 0.5% of these emissions!  

In contrast, plant-based foods like peas emit just 1 kg CO2-equivalents per kilogram, highlighting the vast differences in emissions across food types.
