MiRXES was spun off from A*STAR’s Bioprocessing Technology Institute in 2014 to commercialize an industry-leading qPCR-based technology for microRNA detection. Our ID3EAL discovery tool and workflow has been adopted by top academic and industry partners globally and is backed by the world’s first industry standard for microRNA-base diagnostics.

Our versatile platform technology and capabilities have broad applications in the discovery of biomarkers and diagnosis of diseases. We are starting with early cancer detection, but we will also be addressing unmet clinical needs in cardiovascular, metabolic, and infectious diseases.

We responded to COVID-19 by leveraging our capabilities to mass produce and distribute over 5 million units of the Fortitude COVID-19 RT-PCR test. This made-in-Singapore diagnostic test, developed by A*STAR and Tan Tock Seng Hospital, has been deployed in 13 Singapore hospitals and clinical labs and exported to over 45 countries worldwide. Post-COVID, we will leverage this network to commercialize multi-cancer early detection tests.

At last Friday’s (16 Aug 2024) Singapore-China Business Forum, organised by Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry, our CEO and Co-Founder Dr Lihan Zhou discussed Mirxes' strategic approach to leveraging the dual engines of Singapore and China to accelerate biotechnology innovation, product development and commercialisation.

Beyond China, Dr Zhou highlighted Singapore's role as a development hub for ASEAN and global market access, particularly for innovative sectors like biotechnology. He emphasised the potential for collaboration between Chinese and Singapore companies to leverage Singapore's established networks in ASEAN. For example, by further developing their products/ideas with Singapore partners, Chinese companies with suitable offerings can more effectively expand their reach and market share within the ASEAN region.

The #MOU signed today, witnessed by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang, marks a significant milestone for Mirxes as we expand our presence in Malaysia.

By combining UKM’s world-class cancer and molecular biology research with our proprietary #miRNA technology, and leveraging archived biospecimens from Medical Molecular Biology Institute (UMBI) and The Malaysian Cohort Biobank, Southeast Asia's largest biobank, we will identify crucial #biomarkers that are needed for an accurate and sensitive blood-based colorectal cancer early detection test.

And it does not stop here. This partnership also paves the way for the potential development and commercialisation of a wider range of made-in-Malaysia blood-based cancer early detection tests such as those for stomach and lung cancers.

A road less travelled to success
 
Successful listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) would be a significant milestone for #Mirxes, but it's not the finish line. We view it as a validation of the hard work by our team, and the trust placed in us by our investors and partners. However, the journey continues. We remain dedicated to overcoming the challenges that lie ahead, and flying the Singapore flag high in the global biotech scene. 
 
Excerpts from the Tech-In-Asia article:
 
1. CEO Lihan Zhou points out that the biotech ecosystems in the US, including those in Boston and San Francisco, took “four to five decades to get to where they are [today].” So, what Singapore has achieved in this time frame, compared to the US, is “not bad.” As of 2022, just three out of 52 biotech firms in Singapore were in the commercialization stage. Meanwhile, 14 companies were in the clinical phase, and the vast majority of them were in preclinical stages.

2. Zhou challenges the perception of an IPO as a hallmark for success: “Frankly, at year eight or nine [from our year of founding], going for IPO to raise money to develop and commercialize my product is late” compared to US peers, who typically get listed within their first six years, Zhou notes. For biotech firms, listing on the public markets is “just a fundraising event” to bankroll further development, including clinical trials. The CEO adds that a majority of biotech firms listed on the Nasdaq or in Hong Kong are not revenue-generating – much less profitable – and don’t pay dividends. That’s a “drastic contrast” to how most Asian retail investors perceive IPO-stage companies.

3. Compared to its peers in the US, which are burning “US$200 million to US$250 million a year” to do clinical work, Mirxes is more cost-efficient, recording “about US$50 million” in operational expenses to do the same, while scaling its commercial products and bringing in revenue, the CEO notes. In 2023, Mirxes reported an operating loss of US$70.4 million, a 22% increase year on year, as revenue grew 36% to US$24.2 million. At that annual revenue, Mirxes has exceeded the US$10 million threshold that Zhou considers to be a benchmark for a commercial biotech firm displaying both traction and scale. That said, it “would take 10 to 15 years” to get from the US$10 million threshold to achieving profitability, even in the US, he notes. “Profitability for biotech companies is a complex question.”
