📉 Before we close out the year, we published our latest 2022 market report on the VC ecosystem in Germany today. 

🔎 Our analysis shows the recent developments within the VC scene in Germany and outlines that German startups are experiencing a significant decline in financing. The amount of investment volume and the number of financing deals in the German VC market fell by -46% and -29% respectively compared to 2021. Startups in the late-stage financing phase were hit hardest due to a significant decline in funding amounts. 

☀️ Despite the uncertain situation, it is still a very good time for investors to put money into early-stage startups: 

“In the past, negative interest rates led to effortless fundraising and record valuations. In 2022, with rising capital costs we observe a valuation reset leading to more attractive entry valuations for investors,” explains our CEO Eva-Valérie Gfrerer.

Yesterday we were invited to the showcase of the new AI Innovation Park, which will open in #Heilbronn in the coming years. The Innovation Park is set to become the largest ecosystem for AI in Europe and a center for innovation and knowledge transfer in Heilbronn. The initiative brings together science institutions, startups, and the public sector and will be a new home for humans who work on AI-based products and solutions. 

🎇 It was a fantastic event with the takeaway that we need to think even bigger and more visionary when it comes to AI technology in Europe. Besides informative talks from Reinhold Geilsdörfer, Moritz Gräter, Hans Uszkoreit and a panel discussion about the AI ecosystem, another highlight of the evening were the AI-driven art exhibition, which was hosted by OpenAI. But what do we mean when we talk about deep tech? There is no single definition but different features characterize deep tech firms:

🔬Deep tech solutions are based on scientific research or engineering innovation: Many deep tech start-ups are spun out of research institutions and universities.

🤖 Deep tech is more than one technology: 96% of deep tech firms use at least two technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, robotics, and blockchain.

✒️📑 Deep tech solutions are protectable by intellectual property rights: 67% of all deep tech firms have filed at least one patent.

We just published a new market analysis that shows the latest developments in our startup market and the deep tech sector in Germany. The bad news is: Our data analysis indicates an 18% drop in the number of new startups compared to Q2/2022 and a 30% decrease compared to the same quarter last year, Q3/2021. The good news is: Deep tech is booming. 

Further key insights in a nutshell: 

🟣 Only 578 new startups were founded in Q3. 

🟣 Bavaria is now on par with Berlin: 21 percent of all new startups come from Berlin and a further 21 percent from Bavaria. 

🟣 We see an increase in deep tech startups: From January to September 2022, the number of new German deep tech startups already surpassed the number from 2021. This year, 209 deep tech startups were founded in Germany. 
 
🟣 16 % of German deep tech startups operate in the health tech sector, 15 % in the software sector, and 10 % built industrial solutions (e.g. robotics).

Bye bye Berlin-Mitte - Hello Brandenburg 🏡🍁!

On Monday, we left our office in Berlin-Mitte behind and spent three days in a lovely house in Brandenburg.

As we fully embrace a hybrid work culture, we are always excited to come together as a team. Besides insightful discussions, retro sessions, and inspiring presentations, we enjoyed cooking together, taking long walks in the woods, and feeding the pigs in our garden. 🍆🐖

For us, it was a great privilege to spend time as a team in such a beautiful place, surrounded by nature and animals.
