We are incredibly proud of our ERM colleague, Annie Nhat Anh Tran , for being selected as a finalist in the 2024 cohort of International Insurance Society 's Leaders of Tomorrow programme! 🎉 Her insightful paper, “The X-Factor Unlocking Insurance Growth in Emerging Markets”, explores the unique challenges and opportunities within the insurance sector, using her home country of Vietnam as a case study. Key highlights from Annie’s paper include: ⚠️ Despite immense potential, many emerging insurance markets remain significantly underdeveloped. This is evident in the large insurance gaps, unhealthy competition, immature corporate risk cultures, and critical talent shortages. 🔑 Strong leadership is the ‘make-or-break’ factor in addressing those challenges and unlocking the full potential of these rapidly growing markets, particularly leadership from CEOs and top-level executives. Key qualities required for growth leaders are long-term vision, technical and risk management skills, courage, empathy and passion. 🌍 Each emerging market presents distinct challenges and cultural contexts. By creating a healthy market environment, promoting qualified professionals, and investing in continuous learning, all market participants including regulators, investors and corporations can play their parts in cultivating the next generation of insurance leaders. This week, we had the privilege to invite Saurabh Joshi , Climate Impact X Director of Product & Strategy, to our Sustainability Lunch & Learn session. He shared insights on carbon credits and their significant role in corporate decarbonisation efforts. Colleagues joining from across the region gained valuable knowledge on the topic: 🌿 The reason for carbon credits: Carbon credits are a tool for deploying private sector finance at the speed and scale necessary to overcome funding challenges in climate action projects. They could help close 12-38% of the emissions gap by 2050. 🌱 Carbon markets and quality of carbon credits: Carbon markets, traditionally divided into compliance and voluntary segments, are evolving with new blended approaches. Carbon credit projects, whether nature-based or tech-based, require strict quality controls to ensure market credibility. 🛡️ Insurance's role in carbon markets: The insurance industry can support the carbon credit market via solutions such as political risk cover for project developers or post-issuance natural catastrophe risk for credit buyers. During the webinar, we also enjoyed a lively fireside chat between Saurabh and our SVP of Underwriting, Reinsurance, and Claims, Christian Kolmberger , followed by an open Q&A session. We covered the challenges and opportunities within carbon markets, the importance of co-benefits for local communities in carbon projects, and the evolution of insurance underwriting of carbon credits over time. This webinar not only underscored the urgency for all sectors to contribute to decarbonisation, but also highlighted the collaborative efforts needed across sectors to scale these solutions. We recently had the privilege of attending a very special online seminar tailored specially for staff in our region, featuring MS&AD Insurance Group ’s sustainability team members, Kaori Sato and Ayako Kuramoto who were in town to lead this impactful webinar on the topic of DE&I and Human Rights. The session provided invaluable insights on several critical topics: 🏢 Both the public and private sector play complementary roles to protect human rights. 💬 Practicing Human Rights and DEI requires communication, understanding, and strong leadership. ⚖️ Equity means tailored support for individual needs, while equality means the same support for everyone. 🤝 We have a shared responsibility in respecting human rights within the value chain. 📊 Measuring Impact: During an engaging fireside chat with Rebecca Ang Lee , MSIG Asia CMO, Sato-san highlighted the challenges of quantifying human rights initiatives and emphasised the importance of communication and understanding across diverse backgrounds. They also discussed the critical role we play in advocating for human rights with our clients as we provide coverage for various business activities. Additionally, we learned about specific initiatives undertaken by the MS&AD Head Office to promote DEI in the workplace such as gig work for staff on parental leave to ease their transition back, bonuses for colleagues covering for those on parental leave, and inclusive hiring practices.
