To generate or not to generate music with AI? 🤔 If you're asking yourself this question, we know what's keeping you from starting your AI music journey. Ethics. No wonder. It's hard not to be skeptical when you read in the news every day that someone has stolen your favorite singer's tunes. 👀 We discussed this in one of our prior posts: https://lnkd.in/ePfffdMi But we want to give you some relief. Good news: AI music generation can be ethical, and we're working on it. Here's how 🙏 1) We don’t allow users to upload Mubert -generated music to music streaming platforms like Spotify or Apple Music, and we report any unlawful activity. 2) We don't train Mubert on tunes that we don't have permission to use. That is why our library does not contain any tunes by Beyoncé or Lady Gaga. We only deal with artists who freely share their music samples with us and can document it. 3) We reward musicians who contribute samples to our library each time their music is used in a new track generation. We can do this using sensitive content tracking technologies. 4) We always report attempts to use someone else's music to contribute to our library and respond to artist complaints. 👀 The clash of titans continues… Universal Music Group accused TikTok of trying to cut costs on artists and failing to stop the spread of illicit AI music: https://lnkd.in/eKXj_8nu TikTok strikes back, accusing UMG of “putting its own greed above the interests of their artists and songwriters.” It’s very intriguing to see where the narrative goes because it will undoubtedly shape how the music industry and AI interact. 🤔 But let’s first highlight 3 important lessons from the tale: 1) Artists are still struggling with fair compensations — it’s at the heart of the issue between two companies. 2) We need better content tracking tools to prevent the spread of unauthorized content and more precisely count track plays to fairly reward artists. 3) The issue isn't AI. Stealing music was possible long before AI programs became available. So it's not about the technology itself, but about how we choose to use it. The fact that major labels, including UMG, are partnering with AI startups further adds to this. Someone recreated her song Murder on the Dance Floor and used it in a series of bogus #Instagram adverts. Some of them prompted people to input their credit card information: https://lnkd.in/eypURwVn Does it prove that AI music is evil? 🤔 Only as much as any new development, if it falls into the wrong hands. But it’s absolutely clear that we must make every effort to strengthen content detection systems. Because, as you can see, Instagram still allows people to profit off others' work. We can all make our own decisions on how to use artists' music. Respect their rights, or use their name maliciously. We at Mubert choose to fairly compensate artists for their contributions to our library, limit how other people can use their work to safeguard musicians, and trace any type of copyright violation.
