Patients and caregivers often receive payment to help manage clinical trial-
related hardships. But for Americans on public assistance, reportable income
may threaten to disqualify them for programs such as SNAP and Medicaid.

Many communities that aren’t represented in the drug development process are kept out of clinical research by an unintentional dynamic caused by our tax rules. Choosing to participate could be the same as giving up access to benefits they rely on.

Mural Health is calling on Congress to add a gross income exclusion for all
payments made to clinical trial participants. The exclusion would also remove
reporting requirements that prevent the ~90 million Americans (~27% of the
population) enrolled in a public assistance program from participating in clinical research.

“I married late, had my son at 40, and had a successful, longtime career in financial services. I worked for the same company for nearly 25 years and eventually became president of the firm. I had a great run. But my job back then was to help other people make money. I was constantly working on the next thing: the next business product, the next market, the next board meeting. I was traveling internationally regularly. After a 12-year, life-threatening cancer journey, I never went back to financial services. It held no appeal anymore. I had a rude, sudden awakening that I needed to stay focused on my health and help other cancer patients on their journeys.”

Last month, Mo Punjwani, BizOps & Strategy at Mural Health, joined thousands of riders in the Pan-Mass Challenge, cycling 210 miles over two days to raise money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. This time last year, we had around 800 Linkedin followers. That alone felt really cool to us. 800 people are listening to what we have to say?

Since then, we launched The Portrait Project to tell patient stories, introduced the Harley Jacobsen Act to Congress to remove taxation on clinical trial payments, created the industry’s first fee-free prepaid debit card for clinical trial participants, and built a participant management platform that is truly superior for our customers and users... slowly, we've seen change come to life.

Now, there are 10,000 of you who have joined us here! To advocate for what matters.

Amplifying the stories of patients and caregivers - in a way that is true to their voice - matters.

Creating a net neutral financial experience for participants - matters.

Building solutions that help all patients participate in clinical research - MATTERS.

So thank you for being here. It’s true what they say...it takes a village. We are so proud and grateful to be creating a community of like-minded humans (and professionals) who are changing clinical trials for the better.

"2020 came and was horrific in so many ways. He was trying to get into another trial as he was actively starting to die. Fluid continuously collected in his chest from his lung removal in 2016, and our Mom had to learn how to drain a chest catheter at home so he could breath, due to the pandemic limiting nurses coming into homes."
