MVRDV is an architecture and urban design practice founded in 1992. The firm has received 139 awards and nominations since its inception.

MVRDV was set up in 1993 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries. MVRDV engages globally in providing solutions to contemporary architectural and urban issues. A research based and highly collaborative design method engages experts from all fields, clients and stakeholders in the creative process. The results are exemplary and outspoken buildings, urban plans, studies and objects, which enable our cities and landscapes to develop towards a better future.

Early projects by the office, such as the headquarters for the Dutch Public Broadcaster VPRO and WoZoCo housing for the elderly in Amsterdam lead to international acclaim. MVRDV develops its work in a conceptual way in which the changing conditions are visualised and discussed through designs, sometimes literally through the design and construction of a diagram. The office continues to pursue its fascination for and methodical research on density using a method of shaping space using the complex amounts of data that accompany contemporary building and design processes.The work of MVRDV is exhibited and published worldwide and has received numerous international awards. Seventy architects, designers and other staff develop projects in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative design process which involves rigorous technical and creative investigation.

MVRDV works with BIM and has official in-house BREEAM and LEED assessors. Together with Delft University of Technology, MVRDV runs The Why Factory, an independent think tank and research institute providing an agenda for architecture and urbanism by envisioning the city of the future.

Public spaces should be accessible for all! Inclusive spaces foster social cohesion and encourage interaction between individuals with different backgrounds and perspectives, leading to a greater sense of understanding and community. 

During the Living Cities Forum in Melbourne on September 18 and Sydney on September 20, Nathalie de Vries will discuss how architects can help to create public spaces where diverse and competing interests frequently meet, and how they can help reconcile the tensions found in these collective areas.

Positioning public space as the responsibility of the architect, Nathalie will explain how MVRDV pushes for public spaces across all of its projects, and why participatory processes are intrinsic to successful spaces. Nathalie's presentations will also explain how large-scale, long-term strategies can be developed and delivered to make cities resilient for the future.

Art and culture should be accessible for anyone to see and enjoy. Our interior design of the new Sotheby's Maison in Hong Kong creates one of the world’s most public art and cultural hubs!
 
We designed a new location for one of the world’s leading auction houses, transforming a busy section of the Landmark Chater, a luxury retail destination in Hong Kong. The interior design is influenced by the Taoist principles of dichotomy and dynamic change.
 
The Maison hosts two distinct atmospheres. The light and open upper level serves as a gallery space, welcoming the public to peruse artworks and luxury items in a retail experience curated by Sotheby’s. The lower level houses a dramatic space designed for immersive experiences and intimate personal encounters with art objects.

We’re delighted to welcome our new Head of Urban Anna Gasco to the practice! Anna will be overseeing MVRDV’s urban planning projects and development strategies in the Netherlands and globally. 

She is also Head of Urbanism at the Academie van Bouwkunst Amsterdam, where she leads the chair and develops the educational curriculum. She brings a wealth of international knowledge adding to the vibrancy of our office! 

Anna’s latest book, “The Airport as Urban Territory”, investigates the spatial effects of Singapore’s Changi Airport. She will be in Singapore from Friday 16 August, please reach out to her if you wish to connect!
