natcap is a nature intelligence company spun out of Oxford University. We build products to help corporates manage nature risk, set nature targets, and meet emerging reporting requirements - analogous to how software platforms have improved carbon accounting & climate risk. 

We do this by enabling businesses to understand and improve their interactions with nature - dependencies, impacts, risks, & opportunities. We are a team of ecologists and engineers with expertise across biodiversity, hydrology, forests, and agriculture. We are a TNFD (Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures) Data Catalyst and a member of the SBTN (Science Based Targets Network) Engagement Program.

✅ Nature Restoration Law gets the green light!

The news laws require member states to:

🧑‍🌾 Restore at least 30% of land and sea habitat from poor condition to good condition by 2030, increasing to 60% by 2040 and 90% by 2050

🌱 Enable 3bn trees to be planted and for action to be taken to ensure there is no net loss in the total amount of urban green space

After two years in the making, this is an important step towards protecting and restoring ecosystems across Europe – where about 80% of habitats have “bad” or “poor” conservation status.

"The top three reasons why companies have yet to commit to TNFD-aligned reporting include issues with data quality and availability, prioritizing mandatory reporting first, and assessing the TNFD's relationship to other nature-related frameworks and standards such as the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS)."

On data quality - remember, perfect is the enemy of good enough. Just get started with practical tools such as FLINTpro ReqIQ (GHG, deforestation, and biodiversity risk across all value chains), Space Intelligence, natcap Nala Earth Leeana Dunya Analytics, and others. LandGriffon also has open models that can be easily integrated into your reporting processes.

If you don't have sourcing locations, start with country and region-level analysis and fine-tune later, engage suppliers, and install supply chain traceability software. 

On mandatory reporting - while TNFD is not mandatory (yet), it's crucial to recognize that there is a strong likelihood that your institutional and/ or private equity investors will soon make it mandatory for your company. You may already be feeling the pressure if your company is on the Nature Action 100 list. Every company depends on nature, whether directly or indirectly, and it's essential to start preparing for this shift now.

Relationship to other nature-related frameworks - start with #TNFD, and you will have a strong foundation for #SBTN (nature targets setting) and #CSRD
