내 생각이 상대방에게 정확히 전달되었을 때 우리는 "통했다"고 합니다. 이런 명확한 의사소통을 위해서 우리는 상황에 따라 말의 톤이나 음정을 조절하거나 표정, 손짓 등 비언어적 표현을 동원해 이야기합니다. 어떤 감정을 싣는지에 따라 똑같은 말도 전혀 다른 의미로 들릴 수 있기 때문이죠. 예를 들어 누군가 "나 화 안 났어"라고 말했을 때, 상대방이 정말 화가 나지 않았는지 여부는 말의 뉘앙스에 따라 달라집니다.
 
우리에겐 당연한 소통이 누군가에게는 어려운 일입니다. 특히 말을 하지 못하는 장애인은 쓸 수 있는 소통의 도구가 한정적입니다. 다행히 사회에는 그들을 위해 그림 상징이나 음성 등 소통을 도와주는 보완대체의사소통(AAC) 도구들이 있습니다. 그중 가장 보편적으로 쓰이는 AAC 도구는 문장을 입력하면 음성으로 출력되는 'TTS(Text to Speech)' 기술입니다. 하지만 TTS를 탑재한 AAC 도구들은 대개 단일 톤의 음성을 지원해 성별, 나이 등 화자의 페르소나뿐 아니라 기쁨과 슬픔 등 감정 표현이 어렵다는 한계가 존재합니다.
 
여기에 AI 기술을 접목해 보면 어떨까요. 'Technology Driving Change' 시리즈는 사회에 이로운 방향으로 기술을 활용하는 사람들의 이야기를 담습니다. 이번 편은 NC문화재단의 보완대체의사소통 앱 '나의AAC'에 적용된 AI 기술을 소개합니다. 2024년 3월 전면 개편한 '나의AAC' 앱은 엔씨 Audio AI Lab의 기술로 다양한 성별과 연령 그리고 4가지 감정 표현이 가능한 진짜 사람의 목소리 같은 AI 합성음을 탑재했습니다. 기술을 통해 말에 감정을 더하면서, 장애인 사용자들이 보다 자신의 발화 의도를 명확히 표현할 수 있게 되었습니다.

이해를 넘어, 공감을 전하는 기술의 힘을 이야기합니다.
