We are back in a "golden era" for social and video thanks to breakthroughs in content, measurement and ad tech. - Meta revenue up 19% in Q3 2024 - Snap revenue up 15% in Q3 2024 - TikTok revenue up estimated 30-50% in 2024 - YouTube revenue up 12% in Q3 2024 - Pinterest revenue up 18% in Q3 2024 - Reddit revenue up 68% in Q3 2024 These platforms provide massive or unique reach, high attention and powerful, easy-to-use ad tech. And they adapted very well post iOS14.5, a change that looked like it might permanently undercut social. Early movers realized the opportunity here 2-3 years ago, executing one or all of the below strategies: 1) Scaled UGC/influencer video content - in some cases 100's of ads/week 2) Advanced measurement (MMM, incrementality) to justify scaled investment 3) Full Funnel media - supported by advanced measurement & video But as more and more brands figure out this formula and social more generally, something has to give, right? For one, cost advantages will slowly disappear as supply and demand converge. We're already seeing this as TikTok's growing popularity leads to higher CPM's. The same is true for Meta, Snap and soon YouTube. So in the spirit of not banking on indefinite good times, what can you do: 1) Re-test Your "Proven" Strategies at least Annually - just because it worked this year does not mean it will work, or work as well, next year. The world changes too fast - do not rest on your laurels. 2) Fundamentals > Trends - with social, its challenging not to become trend obsessed. Ensure you have a core, evergreen strategy for your brand that is trend independent. Build resilience in your owned assets (brand, product, site, cx, etc). 3) Do something different - yes these mass advertising trends exist for a reason (they work), but copy cat behavior is not what drove the early movers. Where do you see open space for your brand? How can you stand out while staying true to your brand ethos? I'm excited to see the next wave of innovation in social. Who is already leading the charge?
