THE CUTTING EDGE, EPISODE 4: THOMAS LI, DALOOPA In studying the promise of AI in the fundamental investment process, one of my pushbacks to the AI maximalists has been "hey, how are you going to deal with the model?" Anyone in the fundamental investing seat knows that your model is the critical central hub of your investment process. Insights on business quality, valuation, risk/reward, inflections and revisions all come from having your nose in the model, considering how the insights from your research process flow back into KPI forecasts that inform your thesis. And stock-picking isn't a linear process, but a "pareto-cubed" process where a small % of our insights drive a meaningful % of our investment alpha. Building a clean, reliable model that can help me translate research insights into investible insights, then *critically* knowing which elements of the model constitute an investment signal, is truly the core of any top-tier investment process. Can AI do that? I guarantee you it can't even get close today. The problem is too complicated, and there are way too many edge cases in the process of financial modeling (re-statements, adjustments, re-segmentations, etc.). But can we get there in 9-18-24 months? That's an interesting question worth exploring.
