Q: You’ve worked in the renewable energy sector for many years now. How has it changed?

A: The main change I have seen is the order-of-magnitude shift in the scale of operations. For example, when I was president at JA Solar Americas, we were just starting out with module sales in the US. Our first utility project back in 2013 was a 9.5MW project with Silicon Ranch at the VW plant in Chattanooga, TN. Ten years on, leading developers like Silicon Ranch routinely develop 100MW plants solar plants. 

Similarly, wafer, cell and module manufacturing plants are scaled in the multi GWs and can use nearly 1,000 tons of solar glass every day. Also, the manufacturing costs are at a level today that was unimaginable 10 years ago. 

Q: What will you focus on during your initial months at NexWafe?

A: Initially, my work is focused on securing strategic partnerships, assessing potential manufacturing locations and associated regional incentives, and securing offtake agreements for domestic wafer supply with our customers.

Q: What opportunities do you see for NexWafe, and what the company will bring to the photovoltaics market in the US?

A: I’m excited to lead the development of our US operations. As a company, we’re enthusiastic about the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) initiatives to “re-shore” and develop a complete US solar supply chain.

Manufacturing polysilicon and making wafers are the most capital-intensive steps and are the foundation of the PV value chain. It’s great to be part of a company that aims to deploy a breakthrough technology here in the US to produce a better wafer product with a significantly lower carbon footprint and in a more cost-effective way.  

This is absolutely not a “cold start” for NexWafe in the US. The US is home to world-leading companies in the production of polysilicon, such as Hemlock, Wacker and REC Solar. These companies are leaders in the production of the ultra-pure silicon precursor gases needed for semiconductor and solar applications. Our US plant will need to be co-located with a chemical producer. For example, in Germany, NexWafe’s Bitterfeld plant is in the Solar Valley co-located with Evonik, which is the supplier of the silicon precursors used in the EpiNex process.
