Canadian Retail Sales: strong finish to 2023 (Dec23 +0.9% m/m). Weak start to the New Year (Jan24 -0.4% m/m).

Looking past the month to month variations, the big picture is, despite >3% population growth, our retail sales growth is at the low end of the historical range. 

The Canadian economy remains weak, and higher for longer interest rates means our odds of recession here are high.

For example, this morning, the U.S. Conference Board released the January reading of their Leading Index, which remains in deep contraction territory (shaded areas represent past recessions).
