In this feature of StartupJourneys@IAN, we talk about an IIT-incubated startup that turned the COVID-19 crisis into a pivotal opportunity, setting a new course for innovation in the Indian medical devices sector. 

Established in 2017 by IIT Kanpur alumni, Noccarc is dedicated to creating robotic solutions. The company initially aimed to create a military robot but faced hurdles in funding and commercialisation. Shifting focus, they launched a waterless solar panel cleaning robot in December 2017, becoming the first Indian company to offer such a product commercially.

However, as the saying goes, not everything unfolded as planned. 

In 2020, faced with the COVID-19 lockdown and a strong desire to contribute to the nation, the team decided to venture into the development of an indigenous ventilator. In just 90 days, the Noccarc team successfully developed a cost-effective, high-quality ventilator. They delivered 300 units during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and an impressive 2,500 units during the second wave. 

Noccarc is in the final stages of obtaining BIS approval for their innovative ventilator, which makes them a strong competitor for internationally recognised products with FDA and CE standards. They recently obtained a CDSCO manufacturing licence for their products. 

The company's commitment to research, development, stringent testing, and adherence to global manufacturing standards has led to 7 granted patents and over 18 filed patents. Founded by Nikhil Kurele, Harshit Rathore, and Tushar Agarwal, Noccarc’s mission to supply indigenous ICU ventilators during the pandemic has evolved into a path toward global leadership in medical devices.

Indian Angel Network, as well as Indian Angel Network Fund, is proud to have invested in Noccarc, whose strong founders conceptualised an ICU ventilator and then landed it in the market within 100 days, garnering installations at 650+ hospitals. 

Noccarc is now on an accelerated track to scaling beyond boundaries. While they are expanding their distribution by 5x, they are parallelly building a portfolio of smart ICU-focused devices: leveraging the internet, for healthcare providers.
