Uniform rows, multiple advantages: We test consistent crop spacing 🌱

Sugar beet stands neatly in rows in the field. This applies in a similar way to rapeseed, maize, peas and other crops. What varies is the spacing between these rows. Sometimes it's 45 centimetres, sometimes significantly less, sometimes much more. 
But could it be advantageous to grow all crops using the same row spacing?

In some fields of Hendrik Jürgens and Gesa Kamrath in Emmerstedt, Lower Saxony, we are testing a new approach: a uniform row spacing of 50 centimetres. Hendrik and Gesa come from families with a long tradition in farming. Today, they farm three locations in Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. Like many conventional farmers, they are facing the question of how to manage weed control. As part of our Smart Beet Initiative, we are working closely with our farmers to develop and trial sustainable and profitable solutions for regional beet cultivation. Hendrik and Gesa are part of this project and are testing the row crop spacing of 50 cm in several crops. The project is now in its second year and will run for two more - we are looking forward to the results.

Einheitliche Reihen, vielfältige Vorteile: Wir testen einheitlichen Abstand im Anbau 🌱

Zuckerrüben stehen auf dem Feld sauber in Reihe. Das gilt in ähnlicher Weise für Raps, Mais, Erbsen und andere Kulturen. Was sich unterscheidet, ist der Abstand zwischen diesen Reihen. Mal beträgt er 45 Zentimeter, mal deutlich weniger, mal deutlich mehr. Aber könnte es nicht Vorteile bringen, wenn stattdessen alle Kulturen im selben Reihenabstand angebaut würden? 

Auf einigen Feldern von Hendrik Jürgens und Gesa Kamrath in Emmerstedt, Niedersachsen, testen wir einen neuen Ansatz: einen einheitlichen Reihenabstand von 50 Zentimeter. Hendrik und Gesa kommen aus Familien mit langer Tradition in der Landwirtschaft und bewirtschaften heute gemeinsam drei Standorte in Niedersachsen und Sachsen-Anhalt. Wie viele konventionelle Anbauer stehen auch sie vor der Herausforderung, neue Wege in der Unkrautbekämpfung zu finden. Im Rahmen unseres Smart Beet Initiative arbeiten wir eng mit unseren Anbaupartnerinnen und -partnern zusammen, um nachhaltige und rentable Lösungen für den regionalen Rübenanbau zu entwickeln und auszuprobieren. Hendrik und Gesa sind Teil dieses Projekts und testen den Reihenabstand von 50 cm in mehreren Kulturen. Das Projekt ist im zweiten Jahr und läuft noch zwei weitere - wir sind gespannt auf die Ergebnisse.

Simply avoid unnecessary packaging - and save tonnes of plastic in the process

The vast majority of our packaging for the food trade is already made of paper, but not all types of packaging are recyclable. One of the first projects in this area was the 25-kilo bag for icing sugar. It is now made entirely of paper instead of the previous paper-film composite. This makes it ideal for recycling. Holger Bensemann, who is responsible for purchasing packaging materials at our company, initiated this changeover. "When switching to pure paper packaging, we had to ensure above all that the quality of the icing sugar was not affected. To this end, extensive storage and transport tests were carried out - with more than good results," he reports.

The effect is already evident: almost 700,000 bags of icing sugar have already been converted to the mono material in Germany. This has saved 6.5 tonnes of plastic film. Denmark and Finland are currently following suit. We want to transfer this success to other products, which is why we are currently systematically reviewing the recyclability of all product packaging. 

Where it does not make sense to switch to paper packaging, we have another goal: all of our plastic packaging should be fully recyclable by 2030 at the latest.

Unnötiges einfach vermeiden – und dabei kiloweise Plastik einsparen

Bereits heute besteht der absolute Großteil unserer Verpackungen für den Lebensmittelhandel aus Papier, aber noch nicht alle Verpackungssorten sind recyclefähig. Eines der ersten Projekte hierzu war der 25-Kilo-Sack für Puderzucker. Er besteht nun vollständig aus Papier statt wie zuvor aus einem Papier-Folien-Verbund. So lässt er sich optimal recyceln. Holger Bensemann, der bei uns den Einkauf von Verpackungsmaterialien verantwortet, hat diese Umstellung auf den Weg gebracht. „Beim Wechsel auf die reine Papierverpackung mussten wir vor allem sicherstellen, dass die Qualität des Puderzuckers dadurch nicht beeinträchtigt wird. Dazu wurden umfangreiche Lager- und Transporttests durchgeführt – mit mehr als gutem Ergebnis“, berichtet er.

Der Effekt zeigt sich schon jetzt: Knapp 700.000 Puderzuckersäcke wurden in Deutschland bereits auf das Monomaterial umgestellt. Damit konnten 6,5 Tonnen Plastikfolie eingespart werden. Dänemark und Finnland folgen aktuell. Diesen Erfolg wollen wir auf weitere Produkte übertragen, weswegen wir aktuell die Recyclingfähigkeit aller Produktverpackungen systematisch überprüfen. 

Wo der Wechsel auf Papierverpackungen nicht sinnvoll ist, greift ein weiteres Ziel: Bis spätestens 2030 sollen all unsere Kunststoffverpackungen vollständig recyclingfähig sein.

Achieving more with less 

From autumn, a new extraction tower in Uelzen will ensure that we can extract more sugar from the beet and save energy in the process. This is a key component of our GoGreen programme and supports our sustainability goals.

The extraction tower plays a key role in the production process. The cut beet pulp is heated and fed from the bottom to the top. In the process, water at a temperature of around 60 °C flows towards them in countercurrent and dissolves out the sugar. The beet pulp remains in the new extraction tower for more than twice as long as before - 160 minutes instead of the previous 75 minutes. As a result, eight tonnes less water will be required per 100 tonnes of beet in future.

With the new extraction tower, we can extract the sugar more efficiently, consume less water and reduce our energy requirements. "The investment of 18 million Euro in the new extraction tower supports our decarbonisation goals. We expect to save 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year. The introduction is a decisive step towards optimising our production processes and reducing our CO₂ footprint," explains Alexander Godow, COO.

Mit weniger mehr erreichen 

Ab Herbst sorgt ein neuer Extraktionsturm in Uelzen dafür, dass wir mehr Zucker aus der Rübe gewinnen und dabei Energie einsparen können. Dies ist ein wesentlicher Bestandteil unseres GoGreen-Programms und unterstützt unsere Ziele zur Nachhaltigkeit.

Der Extraktionsturm spielt eine entscheidende Rolle im Produktionsprozess. Die geschnittenen Rübenschnitzel werden erwärmt und von unten nach oben geführt. Dabei strömt ihnen im Gegenstrom etwa 60 °C heißes Wasser entgegen und löst den Zucker heraus. Die Rübenschnitzel verbleiben im neuen Extraktionsturm mehr als doppelt so lang wie bisher – 160 Minuten statt wie bisher 75. Im Ergebnis werden künftig auf 100 Tonnen Rüben acht Tonnen weniger Wasser benötigt.

Mit dem neuen Extraktionsturm können wir den Zucker effizienter extrahieren, haben einen geringeren Wasserverbrauch und reduzieren unseren Energiebedarf. „Die Investition von 18 Millionen Euro in den neuen Extraktionsturm unterstützt unsere Ziele zur Dekarbonisierung. Wir rechnen mit einer CO₂-Einsparung von 10.000 Tonnen jährlich. Die Einführung ist ein entscheidender Schritt, um unsere Produktionsprozesse zu optimieren und unseren CO₂-Fußabdruck zu verringern“, erklärt Alexander Godow, COO.

Hand in hand with our customers

Sustainability can only succeed in the long term if we work together. That's why we continuously discuss priorities, expectations and new challenges with our customers. The topic of sustainability in particular is becoming increasingly important. Not only international companies and market leaders are seeking dialogue with us in this regard, but increasingly also medium-sized and small customers. 
We look at product sustainability from all perspectives and are constantly making adjustments. For example, we optimise the recyclability of our packaging or use paper from certified sustainable forestry in some cases. Transport is also a lever for lower emissions, which is why we are currently testing the use of electric trucks in Poland.
Thanks to our structure and numerous European locations, we are well positioned when it comes to distances. They play a major role in transport efficiency. Accordingly, for many of our customers, the number of kilometres between our factory and theirs is very relevant in terms of their own carbon footprint.

Hand in Hand mit unseren Kundinnen und Kunden

Nachhaltigkeit gelingt langfristig nur gemeinsam. Deshalb tauschen wir uns kontinuierlich mit unseren Kundinnen und Kunden zu Prioritäten, Erwartungen und neuen Herausforderungen aus. Gerade das Thema Nachhaltigkeit nimmt immer mehr an Bedeutung zu. Nicht nur internationale Unternehmen und Marktführer suchen diesbezüglich den Dialog mit uns, sondern verstärkt auch mittlere und kleine Kundinnen und Kunden. 
Wir betrachten Produktnachhaltigkeit aus allen Perspektiven und drehen immer wieder an Stellschrauben. Etwa bei unseren Verpackungen, indem wir die Recyclingfähigkeit optimieren oder teilweise Papier aus zertifiziert nachhaltigerer Waldwirtschaft einsetzen. Auch der Transport ist ein Hebel für weniger Emissionen, so testen wir aktuell in Polen den Einsatz von elektrischen Lkws.
Dank unserer Struktur und der zahlreichen europäischen Standorte, sind wir gut aufgestellt, wenn es um die Entfernungen geht. Sie spielen eine große Rolle für die Transporteffizienz. Entsprechend ist es für viele unserer Kundinnen und Kunden mit Blick auf die eigene CO₂-Bilanz durchaus relevant, wie viele Kilometer zwischen unserem und ihrem Werk liegen.

Nordzucker's investment and growth strategy confirmed at Annual General Meeting

At the joint Annual General Meeting of Nordzucker AG and Nordzucker Holding AG on 4 July 2024 at the Volkswagenhalle in Braunschweig, our shareholders confirmed our investment and growth strategy and approved the dividend proposal. After a very successful financial year 2023/2024, Nordzucker AG is distributing a record dividend of 2.00 Euro per share. The actions of the Executive Board and Supervisory Board were formally approved.

The 2023/24 financial year was the second-best in our history. We believe we are stronger and are continuing to invest: over 300 million Euro will flow into the decarbonisation of our plants over the next few years. We are also investing around 100 million Euro in the Plant Based Ingredients business unit for the production of plant-based proteins.
Sugar prices are currently falling sharply. With our excellence initiatives, we believe we are well equipped for the challenges ahead. They support us on our path to becoming a sustainable and profitable company. A good first quarter of 2024/25 confirms that we are on the right track.

Investitions- und Wachstumskurs von Nordzucker auf Hauptversammlung bestätigt 

Unsere Aktionärinnen und Aktionäre haben auf der Hauptversammlung der Nordzucker AG und der Nordzucker Holding AG am 4. Juli 2024 in der Volkswagenhalle in Braunschweig unseren Investitions- und Wachstumskurs bestätigt und dem Dividendenvorschlag zugestimmt. Nach einem sehr erfolgreichen Geschäftsjahr 2023/24 schüttet die Nordzucker AG eine Rekord-Dividende von 2,00 Euro je Aktie aus. Vorstand und Aufsichtsrat wurden klar entlastet. 

Das Geschäftsjahr 2023/24 war das zweitbeste in unserer Geschichte. Wir sehen uns gestärkt und investierten weiter: Über 300 Millionen Euro fließen in den nächsten Jahren in die Dekarbonisierung unserer Werke. Zudem investieren wir rund 100 Millionen Euro in das Geschäftsfeld Plant Based Ingredients zur Herstellung pflanzenbasierter Proteine.

Aktuell sinken die Zuckerpreise stark. Wir sehen uns mit unseren Exzellenz-Initiativen gut für die kommenden Herausforderungen gerüstet. Sie unterstützen uns auf dem Weg zu einem nachhaltigen und profitablen Unternehmen. Ein gutes erstes Quartal 2024/25 bestätigt unseren eingeschlagenen Weg.
