The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), the EU’s financial markets regulator and supervisor, recently announced European Common Enforcement Priorities (ECEP) Statement for 2024 corporate reporting. The statement highlights the importance of connectivity between financial and non-financial information, here's a summary of ESMA and Europe’s focus in 2025 on the following topics: - International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) financial statements: liquidity considerations and accounting policies; judgements, and significant estimates. - Sustainability statements: materiality considerations in reporting under the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS); scope and structure of the sustainability statements; and disclosures related to Article 8 of the Taxonomy Regulation. - European Single Electronic Format (ESEF) digital reporting: common filing errors found in the Statement of Financial Position. #esma #ecep #esrs #ifrs #esg

GRI and Climate & Company (finance Think Tank) sign an MOU to grow the adoption of international sustainability reporting standards throughout the value chain. Intended engagement areas: - Supporting the uptake of impact reporting and use of the GRI Standards to address the impact side of the ESRS and encourage disclosure by SMEs and value chain actors globally. - Coalition building - through engagements and events that foster the acceptance of ambitious sustainability standards, including the GRI Standards, as authoritative instruments for managing impacts on the environment and on human rights. - Jointly submitting funding proposals to ecosystem supporters with the goal of pooling resources, relationships and aligning funders toward deeper engagement on sustainability reporting, focusing on the EU and G20 jurisdictions. The MOU was finalised in September, during Climate Week NYC. As a next step, GRI and Climate & Company are planning a co-hosted event on the challenges and opportunities of climate reporting, to take place during the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29), in Baku in November. #gri #esrs #nossadata #sustainability #data

At COP16 on 27 October, the TNFD published a discussion paper that sets out draft guidance on nature transition planning for corporates and financial institutions developing and disclosing a transition plan in line with the TNFD recommended disclosures. It supports organisations in responding to the mission of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), which aims to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. The draft guidance builds on current market practice for climate transition planning, such as on the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) and TPT. WWF and the TNFD are expanding their collaboration to enhance geospatial data applications in environmental performance assessment. This partnership aims to support investors and financial institutions in aligning capital with sustainable development. WWF has demonstrated the effectiveness of geospatial data in providing insights into environmental performance over the years. Notable initiatives include their analysis of extractive industries' impact on UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the recent Biodiversity Data Puzzle Report, which outlines methods for generating ecosystem and biodiversity insights across commercial assets. The establishment of a ‘geospatial ESG’ consortium includes key organisations such as Ordnance Survey and Zurich University of Applied Sciences. The TNFD plans to release a blueprint for the Nature Data Public Facility at the World Biodiversity Summit, aimed at facilitating nature-related data for markets. Over 500 organizations, including 129 financial institutions representing $17.7 trillion in assets under management, have committed to adopting the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) recommendations. This announcement, made at COP16 in Cali, Colombia, highlights a 57% increase in TNFD Adopters since January 2024. The TNFD framework is aligned with the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and aims to help companies and financial institutions report on nature-related risks, impacts, and dependencies. The list of adopters includes firms across 54 jurisdictions and 62 of 77 SASB sectors, ranging from asset managers to companies in mining, food retail, and technology. The Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA) has released an illustrative sustainability report aligned with the GRI and ISSB standards. Developed in collaboration with Singapore Exchange Regulation (SGX RegCo), the report serves as a practical guide for GRI reporters to integrate the climate-related disclosure requirements under ISSB standards. Key areas covered include transition reliefs and proportionality mechanisms in the ISSB standards, providing flexibility for companies as they adopt the new disclosure requirements. From 2025, SGX RegCo will gradually phase in mandatory ISSB-aligned disclosures for listed issuers, supporting companies in managing the shift. A recent report published by CDP, “Nurturing Nature: De-risking Nature-based Finance in Asia” examines the participation of financial institutions in financing NbS in Asia. Asia is home to 18% of the world’s forests, which play a crucial role in the continent’s economic systems. However, biodiversity loss presents challenges that could potentially affect up to two-thirds of Asia's GDP. Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are being recognised for their potential in addressing climate change and supporting economic activity. The report identifies key challenges in advancing NbS: - Quantifying benefits: Difficulties in measuring the effects of NbS on ecosystem services. - Legal complexities: Issues surrounding land rights and the lack of regionally binding policies. - Investment attraction: Challenges associated with small investment sizes and long payback periods. A recent article published at the start of the month offers companies three key tips for moving from voluntary to mandatory ESG reporting. Focusing on the SEC’s ruling in March, which mandated climate risk disclosures, here are some recommendations offered to companies in scope of the SEC ruling for reporting. 1. Reuse whenever possible: Mandatory sustainability reporting is not “reinventing the wheel”, there are numerous existing voluntary standards and frameworks to which companies are already responding to. Notably, the SEC’s final ruling is based on the TCFD which offers 11 recommendations for climate reporting. 2. Prepare to “assure” your results: ESG ruling will soon be subject to audits and companies should report their data with this in mind. It is also a way of reducing the risk of greenwashing. “Now is also an excellent time to begin differentiating between what assurances and audits entail. Broadly speaking, a ‘review’ engagement will offer limited assurance, while an ‘audit’ engagement, which costs more, offers greater scrutiny and a higher level of assurance. Deciding what’s right for your company will hinge on what’s ultimately required from a regulatory standpoint.” 3. Think of Digitization Earlier, Not Later: Publishing ESG disclosure into a machine-readable format will save time and be more efficient in the long-term. HSBC Asset Management and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) have announced a new fund focused on SDG-aligned corporate bond issuers in emerging markets. The fund aims to invest in key areas such as sustainable technologies, social impact, and supporting a just transition. IFC is contributing $100 million to the fund, which will be categorised as Article 9 under the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR). This collaboration builds on the previous partnership between HSBC and IFC and is designed to help bridge the financing gap for sustainable projects in emerging markets.
