Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, also known as NYK Line, is a Japanese shipping company with headquarters in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan. It operates a diverse fleet of over 800 ships, including container ships, tankers, bulk and woodchip carriers, roll-on/roll-off car carriers, reefer vessels, LNG carriers, and cruise ships. Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha provides marine, land, and air transportation services worldwide. The company offers various logistics services, including liner trading services, such as container shipping, and terminal and stevedoring services for containerships, car carriers, and cruise ships; and air cargo transportation services. It also provides bulk shipping services comprising transport services for finished automobiles, heavy construction machines, and used cars; transportation services for bulk freight, which include iron ore, coal, and wood chips; and transportation services for crude oil, petroleum products, chemicals, LNG, LPG, and ammonia for oil, petrochemical, and energy companies. In addition, the company is involved in the upstream areas of the supply chain for oil and natural gas. NYK management took part in discussions at various events during the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change ("COP28") held in Dubai, UAE, from November 30 to December 13. The NYK representatives disseminated information on climate change initiatives by the company and the international shipping industry.
 
To provide information on climate change initiatives, governments and industry groups hosted COP28 side events, as well as various panel discussions that often had participants engaging in lively discussions. NYK Executive Officer Masahiro Takahashi took stage as a panelist on November 6 and spoke about the NYK Group’s decarbonization initiatives and the current status and issues regarding ship-recycling.

On December 21, the NYK Group's Hokuyo Kaiun Co. Ltd. (Hokuyo Kaiun) received ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 certifications from ClassNK for the safety management system (SMS) of its crew transport vessel (CTV)* for the offshore wind industry.
 
On December 26, a ceremony to award a certificate of registration was held in Tokyo and attended by Katsuya Nakano, president of Hokuyo Kaiun; Capt. Hisaya Higuchi, managing executive officer at NYK; and Tsutomu Yokoyama, executive officer at NYK.

The certification was obtained by combining the experience of Hokuyo Kaiun, which operates and manages the CTV Rera As for the Ishikari Bay New Port offshore wind farm in Hokkaido Prefecture, with the knowledge of NYK, which obtained ISO 9001:2015 certification for its activities to promote the safe operation of its CTV in August. This certification will enable Hokuyo Kaiun, which mainly operates towing vessels in Japan, to operate and manage CTVs using an SMS compliant with international standards, thereby ensuring an even higher level of safety in vessel operations.

* Crew Transfer Vessel (CTV)
A vessel used to transport technicians safely and comfortably to and from sites during offshore wind power construction and maintenance. The vessel is built for high-speed operation and comes equipped with stability equipment that allows crews to safely transfer to and from offshore wind farms.

In March 2023, NYK formulated a new four-year medium-term management plan, “Sail Green, Drive Transformations 2026 - A Passion for Planetary Wellbeing.” This new plan is positioned as an action plan to achieve a new corporate vision for 2030, which reads as follows: “We go beyond the scope of a comprehensive global logistics enterprise to co-create value required for the future by advancing our core business and growing new ones.”  
 
Under the leadership of NYK President Takaya Soga, who was newly appointed in April, we have worked to implement the four basic policies of our management strategy in the first year of this medium-term management plan: “Make ESG core to the plan,” “Execute an active investment strategy to expand the business in growth areas,” “Accelerate decarbonization efforts based on the plan to achieve net zero by 2050,” and “Further enrich human capital and corporate infrastructure.”  
 
Specifically, we are developing decarbonization initiatives that lead the shipping industry: the further introduction of LNG-fueled vessels, the completion of crew transport vessels for offshore wind farms, measures to establish an ammonia supply chain, and progress in liquefied CO2 transport technologies.  
 
Furthermore, we set a new GHG reduction target in the “NYK Group ESG Story 2023,” which was announced in November.  
 
Regarding our DX initiatives, NYK was selected as a “2023 DX Grand Prix company" in recognition of implementing the “ABCDE-X,” formulated as a business strategy to realize its medium-term management plan. We also promote DX with external partners through collaboration in R&D areas, such as developing technology for autonomous vessels and avoidance navigation and systematizing tugboat attendance management and allowance calculation.  
 
In 2024, the NYK Group will continue to work as one to steadily implement its medium-term management plan and achieve sustainable increases in corporate value.

On December 15, 2023, we had the pleasure of hosting a visit from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA). The MPA delegation, consisting of six members including Chief Executive Eng Dih Teo, met with our team, led by President Soga, to discuss our efforts for decarbonization in introducing next-generation marine fuels, including ammonia. 
 
 During the meeting, we had a fruitful exchange of ideas regarding the adoption of environmentally friendly marine fuels. Both parties expressed a shared interest in pursuing sustainable fuel solutions that prioritize environmental considerations and future collaboration.
  
 Moving forward, we remain committed to researching and developing even more eco-friendly fuel options. We will continue to collaborate with international partners to drive innovation in marine fuels, contributing to a greener and more sustainable shipping industry.

This fiscal year, NYK was selected as a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index (DJSI Asia Pacific). This index includes 156 companies in the Asia Pacific region, of which 75 are Japanese companies.
