Each of our RVM Cubes is capable of redirecting more than two metric tons of material each year, 91% of which would otherwise end up in landfills or oceans. There are more than 140,000 locations where Olyns RVM Cubes could be installed in the U.S. alone. Big news! Olyns is the proud recipient of over $10 Million in Innovation Grants from CalRecycle. 

This funding will help us roll out hundreds of Olyns Cubes across #California, bringing convenient beverage container recycling and instant CRV refunds to many Californians. The new Cubes will mostly be at the front entrances of our retail partners -  Safeway, The Save Mart Companies, Lucky, and Smart & Final. 

“Innovative ways to recycle will help more Californians cash in their beverage containers and provide recycled materials for in-state remanufacturers,” CalRecycle Director Zoe Heller said. “These new sites will make redemption as simple as feeding containers into a machine or dropping off a bag of empty containers.” 
 
So..... What’s so #innovative about Olyns 🧐? 

Put simply, we solve for revenue,  access, and contamination.  

Revenue challenge: Since 2017, about 40% of traditional recycling centers in the US have closed ( 50% in California) because they could not make ends meet. It’s complicated, but the low and variable price of materials, lack of markets, and high operating costs were key factors in these closures.  

♻️ Olyns solution: Olyns makes recycling economically viable with a unique business model that uses advertising to fund recycling. Each Olyns Cube includes a 55 inch screen that displays ads from brands to consumers. This new revenue stream fundamentally changes the economics of  recycling, and makes consumer recycling at scale financially viable for the first time in a long time. 

Access challenge: 63% of multi-family homes in the US ( and 27% of all US households) do not have access to recycling.( The Recycling Partnership)

♻️ Olyns solution: We partner with top retailers to locate our Cubes at the entrances of stores where people shop everyday. This gives people a convenient way to recycle that becomes part of their daily routine. 

Contamination challenge: Today an estimated 25%-40% of single stream recycling in the US ends up in landfills or incinerators due to co-mingling and contamination ( think dirty, mixed up containers in a curbside or public bin). In addition, only a small portion of the plastic that is actually recycled is clean enough to be considered food grade - the majority ends up downcycled into products such as carpet or fabric.

♻️ Olyns solution: We use AI to identify & sort containers into separate bins at the point of deposit. This minimizes contamination and results in an industry leading 99% material recovery rate and, critically,  food grade recycled material. This means that beverage containers deposited in an Olyns Cube don't end up in landfill or incinerators and can be remanufactured into new beverage containers, advancing the path to a circular economy for packaging.

The Mercury News  features Olyns in a recent article about CalRecycle's $70  million in Recycling Innovation Grants, designed to increase access to #recycling in 30 counties in #California. 

Olyns will receive a total of $10 million in funding to expand its network of next generation reverse vending machines, providing convenient access to beverage container recycling and instant CRV refunds to people in the #bayarea and beyond.   

Through partnerships with top retailers, Olyns Cubes will soon be available at the front door of select Safeway, The Save Mart Companies, Lucky, and Smart & Final stores across #California.  

“We’re very grateful to CalRecycle for the grant,” said Olyns CEO Philip Stanger. “We think it will make a very big difference to the consumers and citizens of California who previously have been paying the deposit on their containers but have had difficulty getting that back, so we’ll be able to provide that back to them.”
