Curious what happens when bp’s Open Energi team takes a field trip? 💡 Recently, our team embarked on a journey blending reflection, celebration, and a forward look into 2024. Day 1, we kicked off in the great city of Cambridge. Our tech team took to the stage, diving deep into the latest breakthroughs in the battery power storage space; unveiling our newest tech (the OE Optimiser), to industry updates, to sneak peeks of our upcoming digital insights tool (stay-tuned for updates) On day 2, the team set off to Huntingdon for a field trip to the electrical workshop where the magic happens. All the hardware that our clients use at their sites is manufactured here, getting ready to orchestrate control signals and weave a seamless connection with the OE cloud. 🔧🌐 Great for all of our team to get a better understanding how we build and use our product, enhancing team knowledge and fostering innovation. But it wasn’t just the future we talked about; we took time to reflect on our 2023 journey too; Growth with bp: Our collaboration soared to new heights, sealing a significant deal with Harmony Energy Income Trust, where bp and Open Energi will provide power trading and optimisation services for two battery energy storage systems totalling over 80MW. Industry leadership at #EnergyStorageSummit 2023: We showcased our expertise at the largest Energy Storage Summit, emphasising the importance of innovative optimisation and trading. The theme of ‘optionality’ highlighted the need for flexibility in adapting to market dynamics. Battery activity and market trends: The summit shed light on batteries' increasing prominence in the balancing mechanism and other ways that batteries could help reshape the trading landscape. 'Tis the season of Triads – 2023/2024! What to expect for #batteryoptimization ? As we approach the winter season here in Europe, we'd like to share some insights on #Triads in the context of the new reforms initiated by the recent #TargetedChargingReform (TCR) and how our automated optimization technology is well placed to maximize potential opportunities. In a nutshell: Triads are an annual set of three half-hour peak periods with the highest electricity demand between November and February. These are published every year by National Grid and are used to help reduce peak demand through #TransmissionNetworkUseofSystem (TNUoS) charging. During the previous ‘triad season', and for the first time since 2013, a triad occurred on a Friday. As highlighted by the #EnergyIntelligenceCentre earlier this year, this occurrence went unnoticed by the majority of suppliers due to National Grid’s low peak demand forecast. Open Energi (OE) saw it coming, and finished 4th in last year's triad season leaderboard collated by Modo Energy . We successfully predicted all three triad days and captured two settlement periods with full export dispatches, despite having a smaller battery and shorter duration, as compared to the growing number of the new two-hour duration assets. The recent implementation of the Targeted Charging Review reforms has changed the price structure of triads for this year. However, triad prices will continue to vary regionally. At OE, we assess how different battery systems perform in each region, and this is one of the considerations we input into our automated optimization strategy for our customers. Within our portfolio of #gridscalebatteries , the Hill Farm battery in Leicestershire which OE optimizes is a perfect example. With a lower export price and no penalty on importing during high-side ancillary services, these high-side ancillary services could potentially become a more lucrative option as we approach the triad pricing demands. We will continue to manage asset and site constraints such as cycling, degradation, particularly with regards to utilization of high throughput services such as Dynamic Regulation (DR). The interest within this challenge increases further given the new Enduring Auction Capability (EAC) platform this year.
