Hand-guided laser welding in industry: precision, flexibility and efficiency In recent years, hand-guided laser welding has established itself as a pioneering technology in industrial production. Popular examples are the automotive industry, the electronic production, the medical device industry as well as the aerospace and defence sector. In contrast to traditional arc welding processes, hand-guided laser welding enables extremely fine and stable weld seams with a minimised heat-affected zone. This not only reduces the distortion of the material, but also minimises post-processing. Thanks to the high energy density of the laser, even difficult materials such as aluminium, titanium or high-strength steels can be welded with high speed and quality. Employees can usually be trained quickly, which makes integration into existing production processes straightforward. But what about the various risks associated with hand-guided laser welding? Why is laser radiation dangerous? Not only direct optical irradiation but also small reflections pose a high risk, especially to the eyes as well as to the skin. In addition, class 4 laser radiation is often in the invisible range, which makes the laser particularly dangerous. The intense light radiation poses a considerable danger. In powerful lasers, the light is focused in such a way that very high power densities (= power per unit area) are reached. In addition, very high heat is generated during hand-held laser welding, which causes materials to melt and vaporise, creating hazardous vapours, fumes and particles. Breathing in vapours or welding fumes, exposure to high temperatures and flying particles in the air pose many health risks to the user. These include respiratory tract irritation, lung damage and heat-related illnesses. Smaller particles in particular can penetrate deep into the lungs and cause irreparable long-term damage. Moreover, burns from hazardous sparks are a further risk to health. These hazards can be effectively minimised through suitable protective measures such as targeted ventilation, extraction systems and by using personal protective equipment (PPE) suitable for the laser process. However, the PPE used should be designed to protect the eyes, skin and lungs. This is exactly what the new panoramaxx laser series is built for: to fully exploit the advantages of hand-held laser welding while successfully minimising potential disadvantages for the user. New helmet series: optimised protection for hand-held laser welding Our new panoramaxx-laser-series will address the risks of working with hand-guided lasers with advanced filter technologies, robust materials and in co-operation with leading laser protection specialists. These helmets will be equipped with special protective lenses that not only protect against infrared and ultraviolet radiation, but also automatically adjust the brightness to the respective lighting conditions. This ensures a clear view of the welding seam while the eyes remain optimally protected. In addition, our new new helmet series offer a high level of ergonomic adaptability, maximising comfort even during long working hours. The design will take into account the need for precise and unrestricted movement, which is particularly beneficial in hand-held laser welding. The helmets will be lightweight yet extremely durable to withstand the demanding conditions of industrial environments. Another highlight of the new range will be the optional integration of advanced technologies such as active ventilation systems, which reduce the build-up of heat and moisture inside the helmet. This not only improves wearer comfort, but also contributes to the user's concentration and safety. And of course, with our hybrid solution, you can switch between hand-held laser welding and traditional arc welding without changing your helmet. As our new laser series hybrids are constructed to suit the safety needs for both types. With this new helmet series, we are setting a new standard for occupational safety in the field of welding. A silver Dolphin for our swiss air The top corporate media and documentaries of 2024 were once again celebrated at the Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards. Out of nearly 800 submissions from 46 countries, 154 productions were honoured with the prestigious Dolphin trophies. In the category of «The very best in corporate media & TV of the year» our swiss air launch video proudly took home a Silver Dolphin. The film highlights the risks posed by particles and industrial dust to the respiratory system, emphasising the wide range of industries that could benefit from integrating swiss air into their workplace safety strategies. We produced the video in collaboration with BOCEK Visual Storytelling, who brilliantly captured the impact and significance of respiratory protection. The Cannes Corporate Media & TV Awards annually recognise the world’s finest corporate films, online media productions, and documentaries in one of the most renowned film centres: Cannes, France.
