Ever wondered how the 🛰 #smallsat industry is innovating using modern #additivemanufacturing techniques? In the next 5-6 years, more small satellites will be 🚀launched than ever before. While they become smaller, the demand for energy and thus larger solar panels is actually increasing📈, which requires more efficient solar panel storage and deployment. The current mechanisms are large, bulky, and susceptible to failures, and current solar arrays are not rigid enough for advanced satellites. The AM-SPACE project addresses these challenges. Thin hinges made from #shapememory #polymers are developed to replace the bulky and heavy metal hinges that connect the individual solar panels. Shape memory materials allow the solar panels to be folded up and deployed using only heat, without adding complex electromechanical components. These hinges will also be stiffer, allowing the satellite to maneuver quicker. To make this possible, at Orion Additive Manufacturing we are further developing our 3D printing processes for manufacturing shape-memory and #composite materials to make #efficient and #reliable manufacture of these space-grade hinges possible. The project is co-funded by the European Union in the AMBER call with funding reference number 10193599. This project is being coordinated by German Orbital Systems GmbH and is being carried out in collaboration with Fraunhofer IZM and Fraunhofer-Institut für Angewandte Polymerforschung IAP . 🚀 Exciting News from Orion Additive Manufacturing GmbH! 🌟 We're thrilled to share a groundbreaking paper published by one of our brilliant former interns, showcasing the innovative use of our A150 #3Dprinter and Evonik Infinam #PEEK material in the realm of #4Dprinting . https://lnkd.in/guzysYWc This research was made possible by using Orion AM's thermal radiation heating technology to #3Dprint PEEK with injection molding strength, eliminating delamination and warping. The research also marks a significant leap in #additivemanufacturing , pushing the boundaries beyond traditional #3dprinting into the dynamic world of 4D printing. By harnessing the unique properties of #ShapeMemoryPolymers (SMPs), specifically PEEK, we're exploring new frontiers in #aerospace and #space applications. The study highlights the development of SMP hinges capable of remarkable shape memory effects. These hinges can recover their original form with 100% efficiency, functioning effectively even at lower temperatures. This advancement opens up possibilities for more reliable and robust systems in space, where every component's resilience and adaptability are critical. As we all wrap up the year, we took the chance to end it on a high note: Marien Wolthuis visited Sirris | Innovation forward in their lab in Charleroi, Belgium, to make sure they were all set to #3dprint with their new Orion A460! At their lab the machine will be used to manufacture a variety of #peek parts, be it natural or #fiberfilled - all in the highest strength thanks to our Thermal Radiation Heating systems. We look forward to seeing the prints produced by Guido Heunen, PhD and his colleagues in the new year, and to produce more machines in the A460 series for our other customers!
