👨‍🔬 Are you a diabetic, but NOT overweight?

The study created a rat model of type 2 diabetes without overweight or overeating by feeding them soft processed foods (SPs) on a restricted schedule for 24 weeks. 

These rats exhibited characteristics of type 2 diabetes such as glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, and fat accumulation despite having normal weight. 

Muscle atrophy was observed in these rats, which was linked to reduced insulin signaling in muscle cells and activation of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway mediated by elevated levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6).  The study suggests that the consumption of processed foods may contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes and associated muscle atrophy through mechanisms involving IL-6 signaling.
