To date, our portfolio company Tectonus Seismic Technology has installed more than 1,000 of its seismic 'dampening' devices across 24 projects and is now activating a workstream that includes retrofits to as many as 170 acute care units in California - a state-mandated programme.

Over the past year, we’ve invested in several Australian startups, and we’re observing an increasing pipeline of opportunities. This is a really insightful published in Forbes by Mohan Nair, who is a Pacific Channel venture advisor. It highlights the difficulties innovation teams working in corporates face bringing their groundbreaking technologies to market, and in our view, there are many parallels to the complex challenges many of our portfolio companies developing deep-tech solutions face. 

A few of our key takeaways:
▶ Innovation often clashes with the status quo, similar to how disruptive deep-tech solutions challenge established industry norms.
▶ Short-term ROI expectations can get in the way of innovation that is potentially transformational, a common issue in deep-tech where development cycles are typically longer.
▶ The importance of understanding and leveraging emerging technologies like AI, which is particularly relevant in the deep-tech sector.
▶ Building relationships and finding sponsors who believe in your vision is crucial, echoing the importance of strategic partnerships in deep-tech ventures.
▶ We need to nurture a culture of innovation and collaboration to encourage high-tech research and development.

As Mohan says, 7 out of 10 boats will sink, but you shouldn't let that discourage you from building your unsinkable boat. This should resonate strongly for anyone within the deep-tech ecosystem. Deep-tech is complex – we’re not just building products, we’re creating technological solutions that will solve massive global problems and so it’s critical they can ‘weather any storm and chart new courses for the future’.
