Like Papa member Arnold and Papa Pal Tom, two Veterans with disabilities who developed a quick bond over their shared military history. “We have something in common,” Arnold says of Tom. “He’s a Veteran himself, so it’s a Veterans-helping-Veterans thing. He’s just a good man. He really enjoys me just as much as I enjoy him.” We’re proud to see Veterans find connection and purpose beyond their years of service through Papa. As Arnold began losing his sight to glaucoma, he faced not only the physical challenge of diminished vision, but also the emotional toll of declining independence. Everyday tasks that once came easily became increasingly difficult, leaving him in need of support and companionship. Enter #Papa and his dedicated Papa Pal, Tom! 💫 Arnold can count on Tom for reliable transportation, shopping, and organization around the house. This support provides him with a sense of security and allows him to navigate life with confidence. “My life is better with Papa,” Arnold shares. “From companionship to getting things done, all my Papa Pals have been good.” At 81 years old, Tom brings a wealth of experience and wisdom to his role as a #PapaPal . He understands the unique challenges faced by members like Arnold, and his age gives him an advantage in connecting with them. As our population ages, more and more employees will struggle to balance caring for older loved ones alongside work responsibilities…and employers are taking note. As Melinda Izbicki of Mercer shared with CNN , organizations are expanding their benefits to include support for their employees’ older or ill loved ones. Today in Health Affairs Forefront, Thomas Cudjoe, MD, MPH, MA , of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and #Papa ’s Head of Research and Impact, Kelsey McNamara , shine a light on the complex needs of Dual-Eligible Special Needs Plan (DSNP) members and outline evidence-backed tenets for effective interventions. DSNP members account for a disproportionate share of spending in Medicare and Medicaid due to multiple chronic conditions, disabilities, and complex social support needs that often require more than just medical care.
