Romaine Lettuce Safety: A Small Price for Peace of Mind

Did you know a $150 test on 45 acres of lettuce worth $1M could have stopped a 2018 E. Coli outbreak from a Santa Barbara farm, which resulted in dozens of hospitalizations?

80% of leafy green producers follow safety tests recommended by the LGMA,   testing 375g samples, and some even do more by testing larger 1500g samples for every two acres of product. This rigorous testing has prevented numerous outbreaks and could have prevented the one from the Santa Barbara farm. They do this to keep us safe, but they often don't talk about it much to avoid the appearance of competing over food safety measures. 

Conversely, I believe that publicizing these safety initiatives fosters a positive environment that recognizes and encourages such practices, ultimately benefiting all consumers.

A recent report by Western Growers Science underscores the effectiveness of a 1500g sample in detecting contamination levels that could lead to outbreaks, emphasizing the importance of proactive measures in safeguarding public health.

Some may argue that the agricultural sector's slim margins make the $150 cost for testing 1500g samples every two acres of leafy greens seem steep. However, the extra 0.5 cents per $3 lettuce head for consumer safety is negligible compared to the potential health risks and economic losses from an outbreak.

Food safety far exceeds a simple pathogen test. It encompasses best practices and a culture that aims to minimize the risk of pathogens in the food supply chain.

Yet, a simple measure like conducting pathogen tests on 1500g samples of leafy greens can enhance safety at a cost that could easily be absorbed by consumers without having to burden more leafy greens shippers and growers.

As a consumer, wouldn’t you pay an additional 0.5 cents for each lettuce head for assured safety?  What are your thoughts?

Wow! As the only tech in the world currently AOAC accredited for 1500g of leafy greens in a single test, I wonder how many outbreaks, recalls, and how much brand damage our solution could prevent?

Excerpt from Table 1 in the document: The probability of detection with 1500g samples is 97%, as opposed to 57% with the 375g samples that most people are using today.
