After yesterday's deep dive into a less common EV (The Nissan e-NV200 with CHAdeMO charging), today we're shifting gears to one of the most popular electric vehicles: the Tesla Model Y!

Our latest charge session was taken during the EV Rally by the incredible team at Women Drive Electric—special shoutout to ⚡️George Thurman 🔋, Michelle Breffitt, and Liz Allan! Congratulations to them as well for winning the Energy Efficiency Award by Webfleet. 

Here are some key insights from the Tesla Model Y charge session at a GRIDSERVE site:

📊 Session Duration: 1 hour and 6 minutes
🔋 Energy Charged: 65.10 kWh
📉 Charge Curve: Unlike many other EVs we've analysed, the Tesla Model Y exhibits a gradual decline in charge rate almost immediately after the session begins, rather than holding a consistent kW rate like others.
🔄 State of Charge: Started at 21%, ended at 100%

Data-Driven Charging Insights: Let's Chat CHAdeMO Charging!


Part of analysing charge curve data means diving into sessions that aren't always the "norm." While participating in the EV Rally, the Paua Team had the chance to drive the Nissan eNV200 with a 40kWh battery that charges only via CHAdeMO.

Here's what we discovered during a charging session on Day 1 at the Osprey Charging Network Charger in Knowsley, near Liverpool:

🔌 Session Duration: 43 minutes
🔋 Energy Charged: 24.21 kWh
⏱️ Steady Power: The vehicle maintained a steady pull of 37kW for around 30 minutes
📉 Charge Curve: A gradual decline once the battery reached 80% SoC
🔄 State of Charge: Started at 19%, ended at 90%


CHAdeMO enabled chargers are slowly on the decline at public networks as CPO's look to the more widely used CCS chargers. 
Should CPO's still install CHAdeMO chargers for legacy older vehicles?
The Team loved that they could rely on Osprey chargers to always have the CHAdeMO!

Data-Driven Charging Insights: Let's Chat Overnight Charging!

While on the EV Rally, we at Paua noticed something surprising: there was only ONE overnight public charging session! 😮

Across the event, 55 vehicles parked at hotels each night who missed out on the chance to charge up, leaving potentially 2,200+ hours of charging unused. Unfortunately, most hotels lacked any charging infrastructure within their car parks or even within walking distance.

However, shoutout to Darren Cunningham from the Europcar Team, who in Cambridge found a Connected Kerb charger! 
Despite the charger being a bit further from the hotel, Darren used an electric Voi Technology scooter to get to and from the hotel! 🛴

Here’s what we discovered:
⏳ Charging session: 10 hours, 25 minutes
⚡ Energy charged: 52.93 kWh
📈 Steady charge: Over 8 hours at 5kW
📉 Charge curve: Even over 80% the charge didn’t slow – unlike rapid chargers!

Do we think more hotels or CPO's should be looking now at the overnight / destination charging to make the transition to electric vehicles easier?

Data-Driven Charging Insights: Let's Explore the Details! 

We have realised that it's not just us who love digging into the data behind EV charging! 
This week, we're diving into different charge curves across various vehicles, charging times, and networks to uncover if there really is a difference.

To kick things off, let's take a closer look at the Harris Maxus eDeliver 7 from the EV Rally, driven by none other than Paul Kirby.

🔍 What did we find?

- The charging session started at 18% SoC and finished at 97% SoC.
- It took just over an hour to deliver 63.43kWh of energy.
- From 18% to 80% SoC, the van charged steadily at 70kW.
- Beyond 80%, the charging rate slowed down—not drastically, but with a noticeable swooping curve.
- This session was completed on a GRIDSERVE charger at Solstice Park.

We have analysed the data to see where the vehicles charged on their journey.

And as you can see - drivers did congregate at certain charging locations.

The Paua PINS project has finally been announced. 

Paua is building a shared depot solution for business drivers! 

Paua together with a powerful consortium of Oxfordshire County Council, Suffolk County Council and Cenex are winning parties in the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom funded "Transport Decarbonisation Demonstrators" (delivered by Innovate UK).

We will demonstrate shared depots with the two County Councils whilst also developing a commercial depot sharing solution.

PINS = Private Infrastructure Network Solution

Challenges exist around access, site rules, bookings, payments etc. 

However the opportunity to monetise site infrastructure, grow the charging base and give businessess more confidence to transition to electric is huge. 

What is needed is a "lightweight payment solution" which is what Paua will be developing. 

The original idea was born on the EV Rally 2023 where commercial vehicles shared depots with private organisations to enable charging. The same was seen on the 2024 EV Rally particularly for the larger commercial vehicles. 

Paua has recruited an extensive advisory panel and would welcome input from any business seeking to share a depot or any business wanting to access a shared depot.

Harry B. Is circumnavigating the UK in an electric boat!
