I had a great time at the Science & Engineering Health Technologies Alliance (SEHTA) conference on Friday 🔬🩺🧬… I particularly enjoyed the regulatory updates by Psephos Biomedica and the exploration of funding avenues in MedTech by THENA Capital and NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) . The day offered an excellent opportunity for startups and SMEs to deepen their understanding of developing innovative medical devices. Two major themes stood out in my discussions on the expo floor: **The rise in AI tools 🤖🛠️** From supporting health economics modelling that balances cost with patient outcomes ( HecoAnalytics ) to tools that help rapidly identify and cite appropriate clinical evidence from biomedical journals; the use of AI to drive medical device development and deliver appropriate solutions for patients is only going to grow! **Digital Health 📊🩺** There was also impressive technology on display from Check4Cancer with an app that aims to identify cancerous moles from pictures taken using patients’ phones and CaringOS with a solution that helps support cardiovascular health management. The challenge ahead is to advance these home diagnostics and support tools so that therapy decisions can be made directly by them rather than merely being informed by them (entering the realm of software as a medical device!) I’m looking forward to attending again next year!

What a great few days at this year’s IFA show in Berlin, which celebrated its 100th year! Similar to last year, AI had a heavy presence in most product and service offerings. Smart Home and connected systems continue to grow and, in some cases, firmly establish their core purpose in the lives of consumers. A range of interesting care-at-home and wellness solutions have also emerged from both big brands and startups, addressing some of the core challenges that affect health and wellbeing globally: the ageing population, sleep, and accessibility. While these new focus areas were very much in the foreground at the show this year, there was a distinct lack of innovation in sustainable futures within the home. Is this because sustainability has become a given, rather than a unique selling point in this sector? Lots to think about.
