Our recent PharmStars Graduate School focused on ⭐Pharma Partnership Case Studies ⭐. Three startup leaders from our 68 digital health alumni stepped up to present their experiences and learnings working with pharma with the rest of our #PharmStarsAlumni . In this second post in this series, we share lessons and advice from Ali (Oberg) Devaney , Marketing Lead at Centaur Labs and graduate of PharmStars’ Fall 2023 cohort focused on Digital Innovations in Real World Evidence. Ali presented Centaur’s partnership with a large pharma client that is not public. The project utilized Centaur Labs ’ technologies for text and image annotation for adverse event reporting. Some of her best tips included: ⭐ Be bold: Contact a lot of people. A LinkedIn cold message with a compelling pharma value proposition resulted in Centaur Labs receiving an invitation to a pharma AI leadership team meeting. ⭐ Land and expand: Get approval from your pharma project champion to mention your collaboration when reaching out to others at the same company. Centaur Labs was invited to present at an internal company meeting after networking within the pharma and landed additional projects as a result. PharmStars #PharmaU Fall cohort was delighted by the recent Fireside Chat with Eli Lilly and Company 's Jim Parshall . Jim discussed with our digital health startups Lilly’s approach to innovation related to drug development, touching on Lilly’s long history as a “medicine company” that has a global focus on making lives better. As a PharmStars’ founding pharma champion, Jim Parshall also shared his clear understanding of and appreciation for the need to bridge the pharma-startup gap. He spoke about how Lilly works to bridge the gap and do its best to consider the needs of startups when partnering. What do pharma innovation leaders think about adoption of DCT and RPM? In this post about PharmStars ’ recent pharma member discussion roundtable on ⭐ "Challenges and Lessons in Decentralized Clinical Trials (DCTs) and Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM)" ⭐ we share the perspectives of industry leaders on timing of full adoption for these innovative approaches to connecting with patients. In an anonymous poll we asked our digital innovation leaders what proportion of their company’s trials are fully or partially decentralized. They responded: ⭐ 40% said that 50-75% of their trials were partially or fully decentralized ⭐ 20% responded 25 - 50% of their trials were partially or fully decentralized ⭐ 20% responded < 25% of their trials were partially or fully decentralized ⭐ 20% are not considering running DCTs And it looks like it will take some time for DCTs to become broadly adopted. When asked about the timing to achieve broad adoption, 50% said it will take 2-4 years and the other 50% said it will take more than 5 years. “We all had high hopes that Covid would push us in this space, and I think it created a few things. But I think we are backing off now,” shared one pharma leader. Said another leader with expertise in this area, “We’re happy to be number four, but could someone else go first?” 😅 Given the barriers, there’s clearly a substantial runway before DCTs become the norm. Everyone is curious (and maybe sometimes a little jealous 😉) about successful pharma-startup partnerships. PharmStars has the advantage of 68 graduate startups with experience and advice to share. PharmStars Graduate School program ⭐Partnership Case Studies ⭐ was a big hit, thanks to the three generous #PharmStarsAlumni who shared their partnership experiences and learnings with their colleagues! We’ll highlight one case study in each of three posts starting with the example shared by Teri Chou , CEO at Modus Health and graduate of PharmStars Spring 2022 cohort focused on digital innovations in neurology. Teri presented a Modus Health - GSK partnership with a goal of using #RealWorldEvidence to determine if an exploratory clinical trial endpoint could serve as a primary endpoint in a Phase 2 trial. Here are some of the lessons she shared: Patience is necessary: The timeline was long. The collaboration came about from a chance meeting at a conference in 2018. It took 3 years to get a CDA in place and 5 years to sign a contract. Build relationships: Teri stayed in touch with her contact to build the relationship and it paid off. As Teri said, “be human.” Biggest lesson: Be flexible. Every company is different in how they want to do business. Enter partnership discussions by asking questions and be ready for twists and turns. PharmStars ’ #PharmaU Fall cohort was recently treated to a delightful visit from Genmab ’s Scott Ogden , head of Genmab’s AI Lab. At this Fireside Chat with the PharmStars startups, Scott spoke about Genmab’s transition from a science-only company into a fully integrated pharma (FIPCO), describing how they have remained a nimble, dynamic organization that actively seeks to work with innovative startups. Our startups were excited to hear about Genmab’s culture of flexibility and their innovation orientation, where the focus is not on process but rather on solving problems together. Scott shared that in clinical trials (the focus for PharmStars Fall cohort) Genmab is focused on opportunities to innovate around the rate-limiting factors.
