How is Photon Design Being Used? In their recent publication, the University of Maryland used FIMMPROP to create a 2x2 MMI with a subwavelength grating (SWG). Their results show excellent agreement between their experimental results and FIMMPROP’s simulation. Author Xiheng Ai writes about his experience building the SWG MMI: “ The subwavelength grating MMI we investigated has hundreds of sections. These sections are not periodic so each section has to be modelled individually. It is nearly impossible to build and optimize the design manually. So we use the MATLAB script to command FIMMWAVE so it can draw the model for us. The commands are discussed in the FIMMWAVE manual for both MATLAB and PYTHON. Photon Design at ECOC 2024 Thankyou to all of you who visited our exhibition booth in Frankfurt last week for many great conversations about our exiting industry and how our software is driving it!

It was great to attend ECIO in Aachen last week, one of the World’s longest running conferences on this subject – going now for over 40 years. Marin Soljacic presented a very interesting talk on how silicon can be made to emit light. A metallic grating is deposited on top of the silicon and a high energy electron is shone across the surface of this grating. At certain energies the electron can induce oscillations in the currents which will give rise to EM radiation at optical frequencies. This can be used to create an LED-like source or even a laser. Efficiencies close to 100% are in principle possible.
