Debunking Myths: Liposomal Supplements Are Just Fatty Vitamins By fact, this couldn't be further from the truth. While it’s true that liposomes are made from phospholipids, which do contain bound fatty acids, the science behind liposomal technology tells a different story. So, let's clear up the misconception. Liposomal supplements do not contain free fatty acids. The phospholipids that form liposomes create spherical vesicles, enclosing the active ingredients within them. This encapsulation is critical because it allows the active ingredients to be protected as they pass through the digestive system, preventing them from being broken down by stomach acids or enzymes. This makes liposomes a superior delivery system compared to traditional supplements. Free fatty acids, on the other hand, are simply broken-down fats and serve a completely different function. They can't form vesicles or improve nutrient absorption the way liposomes can. In essence, comparing liposomal supplements to fatty acids is like comparing an armored vehicle to a simple passenger car. Liposomes act like a shielded transport system for nutrients, enhancing absorption and bioavailability in ways free fatty acids cannot. Do nanotechnology regulations concern liposomes? While liposomes can be considered part of nanotechnology due to their size, it's important to understand that they don't fall under the same regulatory concerns as other nanomaterials. In general, liposomes can range from roughly 50 to 1000 nanometers. PlantaCorp liposomes, ranging between 100 to 200 nm, hover just above the threshold of what the EU deems as nanomaterials (below 100 nm). While regulatory frameworks around #nanotechnology are crucial, liposomes (despite their nanoscale) should not be subject to the same #regulations as other artificial nanomaterials. Their natural, lipid-based structure mirrors biological membranes, making them biocompatible and safe. If size alone determined whether something qualifies as nanomaterial, even our DNA and other biological structures would need regulatory oversight.
